reloading with round ball(s)?

I'm interested in using lead round ball for light recoil target loads, but i'm curious: what kind of accuracy can I expect with them? Better than fmj bullets or worse?

Also, I've read various sources that cartridges can be loaded with two round balls, some have called these duplex loads. anyone here tried this before? would these be considered an effective short range defense load?

I guess I should give a little more info. I'd be using round ball in .38/.357 and .45 Colt.
