Howdy. I've got a 1970-vintage Remington 1100 in 12 gauge. I am not the first owner and it was in tough shape when I picked it for a song 6 or 8 years ago. Lately, the interceptor latch spring has begun to jump out of its groove in the interceptor latch. When this happens, the feed cycle basically stops cold.

Have any of you run across this problem with the 1100? What are the remedies?

Thanks in advance. And if this is better positioned in the gunsmithing forum, please feel free to move it.

Thanks for the tip on that part!

The interceptor latch itself stays put on the stud. It's the spring itself that pops out of the groove on the underside of the latch. I don't know 1100s very well at all so I have to ask - how would that retaining clip you referenced help keep the spring in place?

Hope that doesn't come off with a "tone." I'm just trying to understand the relationship between the spring, the latch, and the retainer.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the help with the shopping list, folks. The staking tool comes into play if I decide to replace the interceptor latch spring? Or do I need it for some other element of this repair?

You do not need a staking tool for the shell latch. I Superglued one on one of my 5 about 6 years ago, and now I don't remember which one it was. I will never stake again, and I have the tool.
The thicker retainer is supposed to keep the latch from twisting on the post if there is wear. I have never personally seen this problem. You may need a new latch, OR your interceptor latch spring may actually be broken. I have seen that one before. Look very carefully before you decide if you think you can remove that spring and install a new one.
Good luck.

Virginian - I appreciate the clarification. The spring is less than 2 years/200 rounds old. I replaced it when this problem first showed up but touched nothing else. It might be time to replace both the interceptor latch and the retaining clip with the thicker part you referenced earlier.
