Help! My hunting and fishing buddy's son and his friend were both killed in a car crash in November along the north shore of lake superior. His youth model Remington 700 (.308) was in a plastic hard case and flew out. The case broke open and the separately stored bolt was lost. I told him I'd try and get it fixed so his daughter can use it, but I'm having an awful time finding one. (other than sending it to Remington for $300!).

I know about headspace. If I can find a used bolt, will it fit, and what are the chances that the headspace will be okay?

Slim to none on the headspace.
And finding a bolt is pretty slim too.

Send it to Remington.
Tell them the story and maybe they will cut you some slack.

The problem is, most bolts don't get lost.
Those that do often are still in the owners possession, but the bolt-less rifle got stolen from him.
That makes the manufactures kinda gun-shy about selling replacement bolts.

efelien, I sent you a pm on a source for factory Remington bolts. As others have stated, you will still have to headspace properly.

I have seen bolts on Ebay

Ebay now allows bolts and I have seen some there.
If you live near buy I wouls go rent a metal detector.
