I have had my Rem 700 since 1990 and it has always been reliable, however, just recently it stopped cocking on opening.

I haven't done and work on it since I install the Timney trigger in 1990. I took the bolt apart and cleaned and lubed it but no joy.

Can anyone assist or should I take it to a qualified gunsmith?

I imagine the old dirt and lube inside the trigger housing has turned to cement.

Hose the Timney trigger out with brake cleaner, then re-lube it with Rem-Oil or something.

Is it truly not cocking on opening ? Or does it just not STAY cocked ? It is hard for me to imagine a situation where it would not cock, unless a piece was broken out of the bolt body at the cocking cam, or the cocking piece was broken, either of which should be pretty obvious by looking at the bolt. If it is cocking but then when the bolt is closed it automatically decocks, it is a gummed up or out of adjustment trigger mechanism.

The bolt does move to the cocked position on opening, but if I move the bolt handle back down the bolt eases down with it.

Sure sounds like the trigger mechanism is not holding the sear back.

This is called a trigger override, and it is dangerous.

You will have to remove the rifle from the stock.

As RC recommended, I would spray the trigger mechanism with carb cleaner, I am assuming that there is a lot of gunk gumming up the trigger mechanism.

After blowing everything out with compressed air, if the trigger does not hold the cocking piece, you have a misadjusted trigger. Probably not enough sear engagement.

If that is true, you can try to adjust yourself, look on the web for instructions, or take it to a gunsmith.
