I have a minor problem on my hands. In trying to make a working battery of firearms I've managed to aquire a remington 721 that has been rechambered to 30 gibbs cartrige and I have a 98% unfitted take off 721 bbl in 308 win. At first I was just going to swap bbl's and then later have the gibbs bbl rebored for 338-06 but then I thought that thats going to take two differing magazines (a short 308 and a long 30-06) so then I thought I could just rechamber the 308 to 30-06 but then I don't get cheap practice ammo and 30-06 and 338-06 overlap in field applications a bit much. If I could trade the 308 bbl for a 257 roberts bbl I would but I have not seen any about and then I could just trade the whole works off for another rifle. So in a nut shell

1) rebarrel 721 to .308 win and rebore 30 gibbs bbl
2) rechamber 308 to 30-06 and rebore 30 gibbs
3) trade 308 721 bbl fore a true GP medium bore cartrige
4) trade off the whole bloody mess (308 siaga, cheapo FAL, 7X57 ruger or?)

Another option would be to rebarrel your 721 with a new barrel. Brownells has Shilen barrels with Remington threads in both stainless steel and chrome moly steel. I think the 721 takes the same barrel as the 700.

I have a .338-06AI built on a 721 action. You might be surprised if you look at the numbers on the 338's performance, going to the AI you get about 8% more case capacity. There is decent selection of bullet make and weight, although I don't have a chronograph, the load data for 250 gr bullets indicates 2600 fps or so out of a 24 inch barrel. Not too shabby IMHO.
