I've recently purchased an older Rem. 870 Wingsmaster with an 18" barrel. The serial number is V873xxxV. Someone told me that Wingsmaster did not come with an 18" barrel.

I'd like to ask if Wingsmaster came with an 18" barrel or not. And about where the gun was made.

Thanks,

LR

Call Remington and give them the serial number. They should be able to tell you how it left the factory.

Also, Wingmasters did come with 18" barrels in the police models.

If the original furniture is uncheckered walnut with grooves on the short police style forearm, it's most likely an early 870 Police gun. The receivers were marked Wingmaster on those, as well as on the early Wingmaster Riot guns, which were distinguished from the Police guns by having a 20" CYL bore bead sighted barrel.

It may or may not be the original barrel. Both of my Wingmasters have 20" barrels but one is a replacement barrel. The Replacement barrel has a 3" chamber instead of the 2 3/4" one that originally came on it. Also in the late 1970's I was a Police Explorer and 870 Police Wingmasters were in each of the patrol cars. I think they had 18" or 20" barrels. The Police Wingmasters were marked "Wingmaster" IIRC.

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster "Junior" in 20 gauge that I bought new 5 years ago. It came with an 18" bbl. It was stock from the factory. Nice gun. Dealer told me it was an exclusive short run of the Wingmaster 20 gauge 870's. Later Remington offered the "Junior" 870's in the less espensive Express version. Those are still available.

I have a Wingmaster 870 made in 1960

that has an 18" barrel that I keep in my barn for nuisance animals etc. I believe it was made that way by Remington. I like walnut and blue steel and do not like the new ones made for walmart at all. The wingmaster is a handsome gun and one of the best shotguns ever made.

I have the original box for my 18" barreled wingmaster from 1980. I would say who ever told you that was sorely mistaken. Yes mine is a police model which I have put way too many rounds through.

18" barrel

quote "which I have put way too many rounds through".
I'm just curious, what all are you using the shorter barrels for, to put so many rounds through. Are you mostly target shooting slugs & buckshot (or skeet, etc.) I think of my 20" barrel as mostly a slug barrel & am thinking I'm way underutilizing it & could be having more fun with it. thanks,

I use mine around the farm to kill

nuisance animals. I have too . Mostly foxes, coyotes, raccoons, trying to get at livestock animals in the barn yard. I killed hundreds of them and there is not a week or month that goes by without use. I keep number 4 shot as well as buckshot loaded up alternately. I have had to kill wild boar as well as black bear too with it. I also keep a 30-30 winchester 94 loaded in the barn as well. My 18" 1960 model is well worn but has never failed me. A great gun.
