I currently have a Remington 11-48 12 gauge that I inherited from an uncle. The problem is that the carrier assembly(door on the bottom) will not slide open to load rounds into the magazine. After the bolt is pulled back I can place a shell in the chamber, release the bolt, and the carrier assembly lifts the shell up as the bolt rides forward( as it should). But thats the only time it will move and it stays stuck no matter what I've tried. I've taken it apart but can't seem to find the problem. Any 11-48 experts here with any advice? I've pretty much out of ideas and am about to start looking for a good gun smith. Thanks.

The 11-48 uses the Browning long recoil action.

There is a bronze friction ring and steel washer on the magazine tube that has to be set correctly when changing from light to heavy loads.

Failure to do so will result in increased recoil with heavy loads, and may damage the gun.

It won't work at all with light loads when set for heavy loads.

Is the chamber open while you're trying to load a round? When the chamber's locked open, it will lock the lifter also. Otherwise, I don't really have any ideas but to break it down and see if something's assembled wrong.

A lot of actions have a button to push

The long recoil action with a one piece carrier, you have to push the release button and hold to push a shell in past the carrier.

As you say you can open and release the bolt, I think it is that you have not pushed and held the release to try and load the mag! The same linkage that moves to release the bolt is what is holding the "carrier door" shut

Hey everyone, thanks for the help. Problem solved. Apparently the shell latch which allows the shells to feed from the magazine was installed improperly/slightly warped and was binding things up. A little tweaking and now it's functioning flawlessy. Hopefully I can get some dove hunting in this weekend and really see how it will hold up. Thanks again.
