Hi all,

I'm considering purchasing a new semi-auto for shooting skeet. Right now, I just use an 870. I'm not looking to spend more than a grand on a new gun since I don't have the time to devote the sport to be really serious (even though I wish I could).

I was thinking the new Remington 1100 G3 may be a good choice since it has all the improvements of the 1100 competition, but the shorter 28" barrel (which I prefer). I tried a friend's 1100 (non-G3) and I liked how it felt.

Also, I've already tried the Beretta Urika Sporting, and that series of guns does shoot well, but they just don't feel natural to me. The 1100's feel a lot better. I'm not eliminating the Beretta's completely, though, but let's keep this thread on the G3.

I'm also trying to decide between 12 and 20 gauge. Does the combination of a lighter 20 gauge gun with the lighter 20 gauge ammo still feel like the kick of a 12 gauge? I kind of have a hankering for a 20 gauge.

What is your experience with the new G3? I welcome all useful, on-topic feedback. Thanks.

Chris

I can't vouch for the new G3, but I have a early-70s vintage 1100 with a 24" fixed IC barrel that I use for skeet.

It works just fine- no complaints. The only thing I have to do is not buy the Federal ammo; it doesn't like to cycle properly (Winchester and Remington bulk packs work quite well, though).

I saw a 1100 G3 at the NWTF convention, I don't know if all of the G3's come the same way but, the gun that Remington had at the show was gorgeous!!

I think it was their laminated stock, where they take a select "veneer" and overlay it on a standard stock.

Are the new 1100 G3's able to shoot the light target loads & the 3" shells??

Smitty,

Yes, the new 1100 G3's are supposed to be able to shoot the light target loads and the 3" shells.

The short answer is, probably. HOWEVER... That means exactly the opposite of what it sounds like.

A 12 Gauge 1100 doesn't kick. Well, it does kick, but not much.

I have one built in 1971. Still works like a champ, too. It has NO recoil pad, just a plastic buttplate with a Remington logo. They came that way, and they gained a reputation quickly for very low recoil when they came out in the '60s. For moderate loads, I just don't feel the need for a recoil pad, even at the range.

The new ones have R3 recoil pads, which are Sims Limbsaver pads with Remington's logo on them. I've got a Limbsaver on my trap single, and it is AMAZING.

So, you take one of the lowest-recoiling shotguns ever made, and put it on what is arguably the best recoil pad ever made, and shoot skeet loads in it. You won't feel a thing. Not in 12, and not in 20.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've never been motivated to replace the buttplate on my 12 Gauge 1100, even when I shoot high-brass hunting loads in it. That's how soft-shooting the things are.
