Looking at a 1100 competition master that I am pretty sure is new- $650.00

I have heard that remington is also making a tac 4 shotgun that is the same as the competition master except for black furniture.

Anyone seen the tac4? How much? Is the $650.00 a good price on the CM?

I haven't seen the new(er) Remington 'tactical' scatterguns, but, before you spend the $$$ on one, here's a pic of my Competiton Master 'clone' that I built:

Background. . .
I bought a slightly used 1972 model 1100 for $100.
I then found an article online that discussed building the 'CM' from a standard 1100, then called Remington and bought all of the parts that I needed EXCEPT the stock. I put a Speedfeed III pistolgripped stock on mine.
(Remington wanted TOO much $$ for their synthetic stock.)
Here's the link for the 'CM clone' build:

I paid less than $70 for the Speedfeed stock and forend from CTD.

If I remember correctly, I have a lot less than $400 in this scattergun.

I have debated the build route. The only problem is that I don't come across the $100 shotguns up here. You don't get that much flexibility with barrel length (need the 22" for shell capacity, don't want much longer) and I want a choke so a cheap cut down of a 28" isn't doable either.

The build in the article would actually cost me more than the $650 dollar CM in question, but they do start with a brand new shotgun.

I would almost prefer a wood stock and the easy loader from brownell's is supposed to be a better option than the CM loading gate.

I do have the Sweeney shotgun book...

Maybe I'll poke around for a cheap 1100 for awhile and see what pops up. Thanks for the article link.

I've never used the e-z loader, but, I have used this CM Carrier Assembly, quite a bit.

To operate the gate, it's now just a 'touch' whereas, the original carrier assembly was a deliberate 'shove' and took (at minimum) three or more times the pressure to operate.

As for a shorter length barrel, I thought a long time about the 22" barrel vs. the 18".
I might still wind up with the shorter barrel. This scattergun has a little bit of weight to it, when the magazine is full.

The pistol gripped Speedfeed stock makes the shotgun easier to hold, one handed (as when loading) during drills, etc., but, I'm still a dinosaur and am partial to a standard configuration stock.

As for picking up the 1100 for $100.00, a co-worker was in need of some cash, to build an engine for his racecar, and offered the shotgun to me, for that price.
I did have the money in front of him as he was finishing the sentence.

Thanks for reading.

I want the 22". It actually is the obstacle to the build. I can't find any for less than the $200 remington ones, so aside of finding the $100 deal like you I don't think I am going to save much building.

Are the benelli's THAT much better?

I don't have any huge issues with Benelli's. My only issue with them is just that I don't know much about them. I already have an 870 that I like, and am familiar with as far as stripping etc.

I am not interested in a pistol grip shotgun either and most of the tactical benelli's I see have them.

I think with the CM, I would also be done right out of the box...

Why are the Benelli's a big improvement?

Can you give me a quick rundown of the models, M1 vs M4 and so on?

Yes, the Benellis are that much better.

The two main pluses are that they are lighter and very few moving parts.

Gas guns need to be kept clean and there is a bunch of parts in that trigger group that dont like getting beat up. Fine for a trap shooter or a hunter, but for an IPSC shooter that runs slug, buck, birdshot, spreader, ect there is plenty of parts that can and will break.

I bought two of the 1100CMs and ran them for a season. I had two so when one broke, I had a back up while the other was at the gunsmith shop.

Gas guns (1100, Gold, Sx2) are very soft recoiling compared to the lighter Benellis. I notice this in practice, but not in matches.

Now I have two M2s worked over by Bennie Hill and myself.

The M2 is a slightly upgraded M1. Benelli propaganda says it kicks less than non comfortec guns. I am not so sure. It kicks about the same as an equally worked over M1 using the same ammo.

The M4 is a gas gun. Dont know much about them as I have never shot one or had it apart.

The Super Black Eagle is a beefier M1/2 designed to handle 3.5 inch ammo for hunting. If I didnt have all this $$$ wrapped up in M2s, I would get two left handed SBE2 even though they are slightly heavier and longer. After shooting a few hundred rounds through a leftie SBE, I think a left handed shotgun is the way to go for a right handed shooter that loads weak handed.

Hoser- How long of a barrel would I need to run a +5 tube?

I know a place that has used benelli's from time to time but I don't know about barrel length and I am guessing a replacement barrel is big $$.

A +5 tube is even with a 21 inch tube and the +6 is even with a 24. A lot of guys run a +6 with a 21 inch barrel.

For USPSA matches I use a +5 so I cant get more than 8 in the tube. All other matches I use a +6.
