Remington 121 original finish?????

Anyone here know what the original wood topcoat finish was/is on a 1949 Rem 121? Thanks,Mike
 
Some sort of sprayed on lacquer or varnish.

Exactly what I have no idea.

They didn't start using the glossy epoxy bar top finish until much later.

Thanks RC that's what i thought. Also weren't all mass produced rifles before 1960 except military,topcoated with lacquer or shellac with lacquer being the easiest to apply?
 
I think so.

I don't recall anyone using the shiny thick epoxy & acrylic finishes until Weatherby and later Winslow Arms made it popular in the 50's & early 60's.

Then it still took a while before the main stream manufactures jumped on the band wagon.
I can't recall when Remington switched to it, but 60's might be about right.
