Hey guys. Recently picked up a Remington Model 700 chambered in what I thought was .257 Roberts. Upon further review the barrel is stamped .257 Roberts with smaller lettering beside it, which my old eyes couldn't originally see, Ack Imp. Question is, can i fire regular .257 Roberts ammo in the gun? I'm guessing the answer is no, but hoping it's yes. Thanks!

Yes if it is probably done you will be able to fire factory 257 Roberts ammo in it. If in doubt buy a headspace gauge go/no go gauge and check it, or have a gunsmith do so.

The ackely improved cartridges were designed to be able to fire factory ammo and the brass will expand to the new AI dimensions. If you handload you will then be able to reload the spent brass using AI dies.

Absolutely yes. You will end up with 257 AI brass (fire formed). You can reload the brass for the rifle, but it will not work in a 257 Roberts.

My wife has a Rem 700 in 257 AI (it took a while to settle on it). I have a 257 Roberts,

Pm me if you ever decide to sell :)

There is a very real potential issue which could preclude the use of factory ammunition. The Ackley Improved series was specifically designed to have the barrel set back a thread because the headspace datum is different. If all the gunsmith did was run an AI reamer into the factory chamber, you may suffer misfires and/or case separations/short case life.

If chambered correctly then there is no problem using factory ammunition other than losing some velocity.

I’ve had great accuracy with the Hornady 117gr factory stuff in my 257 Rob AI

If you close the bolt on a factory .257 cartridge in a properly cut Ackley Improved chamber, you should feel a distinct "crush fit." If you don't, you may have the problem 25-20 WCF describes ... but I think that unlikelly.
