I have a Remington 550 here that I am working on, failure to feed, the rounds are visible in the cartridge guide, but seem to stop part way in, I have tried amping up the magazine tube spring, to no avail, I have cleaned the thing from stem to stern (disassembled and cleaned/lubed) and it is still doing the same thing, the rounds aren't coming back far enough to rise up to be fed, or they aren't being lifted, or a combination of both...any help appreciated.

Here's a schematic on the 550-1 version, not knowing your actual model #, but the parts should be similar. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the carrier not having enough lift with a weak tension spring. Manually work the action while empty, to see if the carrier is pushing up all the way. Likely replacing some of the parts involved will take care of the problem.
It's certainly worth it, as 550's are great rifles.

ok I replaced the magazine spring, the carrier tension spring, and the lifter plates as well, still same problem, here is a pic of where it is hanging up...any ideas?

I'd look for wear in two places. One is the cartridge stop, the other is the end of the lifter. Do the rounds ever feed back into position to be lifted?

s, l, lr

it appears that the lifter is not dropping down to allow the rounds to come in over the top of it...but I can figure out what is supposed to make the lifter drop down to allow that.

The lifter drops from the bolt riding over it. As the lifter drops, it goes over center on the spring to push it all the way down, I believe is the case. It may also get an assist in the this from the rear of the lifter be hit by the bolt as it closes. Have you looked at the under side of the bolt for wear? A couple I've seen were pretty chewed up.

Make sure that screw in the top of the receiver that is supposed to hold the case deflector on isn't going through too far without it and binding up the bolt.

The Remington 550 also has a "William's Floating Chamber" in it to allow it to cycle with .22 Short & Long.

Make sure it isn't gummed up & stuck with bullet lube & powder fouling.

For those that may be interested, got it fixed, there is a lug that is staked into place on the carrier that was missing, this lug engages the lifter and the two move together, the replacement part from numerich was missing this lug as well, I found it because I happened to run into a gunsmith in the area (my uncle) that had another 550 laying around for parts, took it apart and it was immediately apparent. So back together...and running strong.
thanks for the help guys!

Glad to hear that you're operational again. Always nice to have another rifle around for illustration.
Merry Christmas.
