My Remington 7.62x39 mini-mauser model 799 came in Friday. I mounted a scope, assemble some handloads and RAN to the range.
The groups below were fired from 80 yards from the bench. It tended to like bullets seated closer to factory length, rather than bullets seated close to the rifleing. No idea why? Seemed to shoot about the same with 150's or 125's...even grouped Wolf steel cased stuff into just a tad over an inch. Once I figured out which load (24gr of 1680) and seat depth the gun liked best, groups were consistantly 3/4 of an inch.

Fit and finish is great. Very light and well balanced. trigger is better than I expected (sorry no gauge)...not a matchgrade hair trigger, but no Bill Ruger lawyer trigger either. . Beautiful laminated stock with high polished blueing. Its a very handsome gun. Recoil is barely there, noise level is very low...its a very comfortable gun to shoot.

Now for the negative...the only one I could find so far. The bolt is a PITA. The bolt handle is short and small, and the bolt is very stiff and likes to bind. Its not as bad as a Mosin Nagant, but it is very anoying. I have a stone bruise on my palm and thumb from it :(. That is the only thing keeping me from declairing it the perfect youth deer rifle.

Anyway, well worth the $400 CDNN price.

Put 80 rounds through mine today. Shooting at 110 yards using a mixed bag trying to find an inexpensive sp bullet it likes. Tried Wolf 154gr & Golden Bear 125gr & Winchester 123gr. It seemed to shoot the 154gr wolf the best. I like the trigger, not overly heavy but a little bit of creep that leaves you "feeling" for the break.

My best group was about 2" but I have to take some of the blame for that. It was pretty informal shooting as I was using the 799 to fill in between other rifles while I let barrels cool and just dialing in the new scope to get it close (Redfield 2-7x33). On my next trip I'm planning on giving it the attention it deserves.

My main complaint is my girlfriend likes it so much it's hard to get it away from her. :D After shooting some of the other rifles I had with me she fell in love with the compact size, light weight and very little recoil.

Is the bolt tight to close on an empty chamber? Maybe the cases are bit oversized. May loosen with some time and use.

check the left side of the bolt shroud where it gos into the back of the receiver. my 799 in .223 was rubbing there and needed to be deburred. once that was cleaned up the bolt was a lot smoother.
the bolt handle is a joke. i'm going to weld on an oberndorf style handle that is scaled down to fit the size of the action.

i won another 799 chambered in 22 hornet a couple days ago, i might actually shoot this one before i whack it in the head and gut it out.

I looked on Remington's website and couldn't find the 799. Has it been discontinued?

That sounds like a sweet, handy carbine.

yes 799 line is no longer produced, but you can still find them on gunbroker.com for very cheap I think

Nice looking carbine! I like my CZ mini mauser, the 527M, same caliber, great light rifle. I agree on a great youth rifle, mine will be there to teach my son, with some light loads, even though it kicks very little.
Thanks for posting, sir.

fireman 9731, check CDNN investments. They have them on close out for $399.

Saxon, the bolt is tight and binds up empty or not, seems to be a flaw in the design. Mine starts to bind at the end of the retract stroke, and at the same spot on the way back in.

LOVE my new CZ-527, the little miniMauser bolt is so cute! It's a rifle, though; may be carbine length but it's dead-on at 100yds and big enough to take down deer I reckon...
