Hi guys, I've been reading up on getting a rifle to do some long range shooting. I currently only own handguns and shotguns so forgive my ignorance.

From what I've seen, the Remington 700 PSS in .308 is considered one of the best options for in long range rifle options, but from what I can tell, it's not for sale to civilians any more. Is this right?

Seems like a lot of folks have them. I think the LTR (20" barrel) is still available. I'm also in California which never helps the situation :)

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hey thanks man. Impact guns was one of the sites I was looking at actually. Notice how it says "Available to officers"? All the other 700P models on that page say "Available to civilians and officers".

Impact Guns - 700PSS

Yeah but at the top of the page it says
Remington 700 Police Rifles are not restricted to just law enforcement-- they make an accurate and rugged hunting rifle as well.

They must be trying hard to confuse us:rolleyes:

Sometimes CDNN has them for sale but I don't see any in the current catelog

D'oh! Thanks for pointing that out! I completely missed it.

Time to raid the piggy bank :)

The Remy 700 PSS has been replaced by the 700 P-DM. The PSS stands for the Police Sniper System, while the P-DM designation is the Police, Detach Magazine.

The difference is that PSS had an internal magazine while the P-DM had a Detachable Magazine. There was some argument over the length of the magazine on the P-DM's model's detachable magazines. It's said that the P-DM's detachable magazine is shorter than the PSS's internal magazine, and may interfere with custom or handloaded rounds of varying Case Overall Length. But unless you handload your own custom ammo, it may be a moot point, there is plenty of excellent factory loadings out there available for reasonable prices. For example, the Federal Gold Medal Match .308 with the 168 grain or 175 grain Sierra Matchking BTHP gives consistently excellent results.

No matter what flavor, either the the 700 PSS or 700 P-DM is an excellent niper weapon. It is capable of high accuracy and reliable cold barrel shot placement. As long as it is professionally mated with a high quality mount and high quality optics, the price of about ~$700 is very reasonable and gives it a high price to value ratio.

The 700 PSS and the P-DM models are still available on the street at the popular gun auction web sites.

Wrong no problem

The Remington 700 PSS was replaced by the 700P.

Remington totally dropped the detachable magazine system... too many problems with it.

The 700PSS had a 24 inch barrel while the 700P has a 26 inch one. Other than that, there are no differences.

i have a remington pss dm ,if believe thats the model restricted to leo's.it is a great rifle except for the detachable mag,it has given me nothing but problems.

Apologies in advance for digressing on the magazine issue. But, it astonishes me that a respected, long-established firearms company cannot devise a RELIABLE detatchable-magazine system for a bolt-action rifle in the 21st century. That's just pathetic.

I have two LTRs, one DM and one internal. The DM has never given me any problems at all, and it is the one I use more - but you have to make sure the magazine is properly seated, which in fairness is pretty easy to goof up unless you're paying attention. If not properly seated, it's a jam-o-matic. Properly seated, no problems at all.
