Hello all,

I recently bought a Remington 700 SPS .308, and I have a few questions about the tightening procedures for the action screws. Remington does not specify any particular tightness for the 700 action screws, although they do have a procedure for the 770 in their manual. I have heard that the action screws should be put in at about 55-65 inch-pounds, and I've even heard as low as 35 inch-pounds for factory stocks. So my question is, is it necessary to be precise and use a torque wrench on the action screws, and how much torque to put on it?
Thanks,

The 65 lb/in is for aluminum bedding block stocks. The 35 lb/in is usually for all other stocks. Some rifles might shoot better with a little more torque or a little less. It is hard to say until you shoot it. It is good if you have a torque wrench but you don't have one you can mark them and the stock before you loosen them so they can be returned to the way they were from the factory.

just tighten 'em up enough to keep the gun in the stock and have at it. i don't torque mine - just enough so i don't have problems w/ a loose stock.
