I just picked up a Remington 700 XHR 7mm Mag and took it to the range for the first time today. I got it sighted in and it shoots great, but I noticed a couple of deep scratches up near the neck on each piece of brass. This may be nothing to worry about but thought I would ask here before packing it up and sending it off to Remington. One of the range officers told me they would go away after time, but in the meantime it is making me a little leery about reloading the brass fired in this gun. Is there a way for a novice to polish these burs or should I send it back to Remington and let them polish it properly? Thanks for your help!

Neck dimensions are pretty critical; you'd be hosed if you opened it up too much or ovalized that area.

If this is a new gun take it back to the dealer and let them handle it; if you got it used any decent 'smith should be able to clean it up.

It is a new gun. I purchased it from an online dealer and their return policy is void if the gun has been fired. I will call Remington on Tuesday and see if I can at least get them to cover shipping costs. Thanks!

Hope you don't mind, I just need to vent. I called Remington and they paid the shipping on this gun to their repair center in Ohio. I waited a little over a month for them to smooth out the chamber and return the gun. I checked it today and the *%$( burrs are still there. I don't believe they did anything to this gun other than hold on to it for 30 days and ship it back. Am I over reacting concerning these burrs in the chamber of a brand new gun? I tried a new piece of brass in it and there are 2 deep scratches in the brass. What would you do? I just received another gun back from the same shop that they claimed had rust in the chamber and it was causing the brass to stick after firing. They charged me over $100 to polish the chamber and ship it back. Unfortunately I won't know if this problem was corrected until the next time I go to the range. As of right now I am very disapointed with the work they did on this new gun. I'm going to call Remington tomorrow and let them know I'm not at all satisfied but I doubt they will be much help since their authorized repair center claims the gun is "as new" when they shipped it back.

Remington repair centers are a joke...I found out the hard way (4 times)

If you want it fixed...firmly, but politely demand that it be sent to Ilion, NY (the facility that makes the barrels)

Are you sure that the brass isn't being scratched by the magazine ramp or other such inner bits in the action during the feeding process?

Be patient and work your way up the chain of command at Remington.

Pretty sure, but I've been wrong before. I fed the brass direct to the chamber and pushed it in as far as it would go with my finger before closing the bolt. I was very careful when ejecting the brass to make sure it didn't hit anything. I have 4 other Remington 700's and none of the others scratch the brass like this. This is so deep that I would be very leery about reloading any brass from rounds fired in this gun.

Can you see burrs in the chamber?

No, I cannot see them. The case has two scratches, one on the tapered section of the neck and one on the top of the case close to where the taper begins. I just tried another fresh case and it came out with scratches in the same place as the piece I tried earlier today. I showed the brass to one of the range officers at the range I belong to and he also felt certain it was burrs in the chamber causing these scratches on the brass.

Check out their corporate website. Look for press releases from the public relations department chief ( they often will list their email, email is best, fax will work, you may have to dig, hint: a Mr. Davis I believe ). Nicely, explain the problem (in your email), with your hopes for the coming season. Include a couple of brief online reviews you have written on the problem. They aren't dummies. They will delegate someone to contact you and quick too, I suspect. Would like to know how it comes out. Best

I contacted Remington again on Tuesday and they are sending another shipping label to have the gun returned to their facility in Ilion, NY. Even though I'm somewhat steamed about having to go through this with a new gun, at least the last fellow I talked to sounded like he was actually concerned.
