Have a custom remington 700 in 338 RUM. Action has been trued/blueprinted and had a Heavy broughton barrel installed. Now because of brass availability I am leaning towards getting it rebarreled again and this time in 338 lapua. Would there be any benefits to doing this besides brass availability or would selling and buying a Remington MLR in 338 lapua be a better move. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

"...338 Lapua..." The downside to that is the cost and availablity of ammo and brass. Midway, for example, wants $85.99 per 20 for Hornady 285 grain HPBT match ammo. $44.49 per 20 for brass. Compared to the $26.99 per 20 for Remington RUM brass. And $69.99 per 20 for Remington RUM hunting ammo. Mind you, the Lapua ammo/brass may not be available, locally, at all.
Case head of the Lapua is 54 thou bigger. Bolt face would have to be opened, if it can be. Mag length shouldn't give you much grief though. The RUM case is 36 thou longer. Longest OAL for the RUM is 3.590". 3.600" for the Lapua.

Sunray

Thanks sunray for your help. The problem is finding brass for the RUM. Everyone that I can find that stocks it is all out of stock on it and has been. Not worried really about finding things locally as I live in the sticks anyway and if you dont shoot a standard caliber your screwed anyhow. I think I may just see if I can hoard up some brass and continue to shoot the rum as its a great shooter and has the power to do around the same as the lapua. Thanks again for your help Sunray

Weatherby?

Just a thought, but if you're looking lots of oom-pah and better availability (limited though they all may be) of brass & ammo, the 340 Weatherby (and it's big brother 338-378 Wby) is the original whomper-stomper (US, of course). If for hunting, I dare say it will kill every brown bear and lightly armored vehicle in North America with aplomb. If on the other hand you're having fun with big cartridges, that's different & I understand - drive on!
