I just purchased a used remington 700 custom .375 h&h mag. It did not have any scope mount on. Does anyone have any recommendation on a scope mount? Also I need to get a scope for it does anyone have a recommendation for that? It does not have regular sights and the holes are plugged so I do not need any high mounts or quick change ones.

Thanks

Most any of the scope mount makers will list for your rifle. Something like Warne or Leupold with a reputation for recoil resistance is a good way to go. I'd be looking for a scope with as long eye relief as possible, 1.5 x 5 or 2 x 7 power are good medicine in this calibre.
Steve.

Leupold dual-dovetail would be my preference...as would a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm (favoring the German No. 4 reticle).

:)

On my Remington 700 .375H&H I went with Warne Maxima Steel bases and Maxima lever rings with the 1.75-6x Leupold for my South African Safari. I also took a Model 70 Classic in .270 WSM with Warne Bases and a Leupold 2.75-10 in the Maxima lever rings. I carried an extra 3-9 Varix 2 in Warne lever rings just in case for either rifle, but never needed it. The Warne steel bases and the Maxima Lever rings seem bullet proof after the 5 years I've used them . I previously tried the Dednutz system and found it very rugged and low , but you can't swap out scopes or go to irons like the lever rings.

+1 for Dednutz...but +2 for the QR style rings, which precludes the Leupy DD mounts, for a dangerous game rifle (which honestly I assumed this wasn't, being on a Remmy action ). Always nice to have access to the BUIS (or even a BU optic) on such a rifle.

Gordon, wouldn't the ring spacing be different for those two rifles (one a magnum action Remmy, the other a short action Win.) and therefore necessitate moving one or both depending upon the rifle you put it on?

:)

The 4x fixed scope is all that! On a .375 you might be better served with less power tho..
Yes the ring spacing is different. In Africa you can usually sight in a switched scope easily enough, and I would not trust a trophy shot with a rifle I did switch scopes on anyway. Talley system mounts are really superb also, I just happen to like the Warne Maxima lever rings the best of any thing else I have tried on a hunting rifle.I use Badger Ordinance for Long range rifles and La Rue Tactical on tactical types BTW.

Thanks for all the help so far! Now I atleast know terms to search for, to look at rings that are useful! I came across this scope and was wondering how you think it would hold up. It says its tested to 10,000 rounds of 375 h&h.

Weaver 4x28 Classic Scout Scope - Weaver Riflescope Product Info
Weaver Classic 4x28 Scout Scope 849417 manufactured from a one-piece aircraft grade aluminum tube. The Weaver Scout Riflescope 4x28mm 849417 is a fixed power riflescope built to take heavy recoil punishment and hold zero to 10,000 rounds from a .375 H&H magnum rifle. The Classic 4x28mm Dual-X Reticle Riflescope by Weaver has a 28mm objective lens which offers a consistent field of view; excellent for open field hunting. The Weaver Classic K-Series 4x28 Scout Riflescope 849-417 is one of the easiest scopes that any instinctive shooter will use regardless of range. The fully multi-coated optics on this Weaver riflescope eliminates glare while dramatically increasing image contrast and brightness. The Classic Scout 4x28 Riflescope is a great tool for hunters and shooters alike who appreciate the long eye relief common to fast-handling, scout style rifles.

I will mostly use this gun to shoot every once in awhile for fun. no plans on hunting dangerous game with it yet. the scope will get used at the range and probally deer hunting one or two days a year.I mostly got it to hunt bear one day but have no immediate plans.

That Weaver should do fine, and is one of the toughest reasonably priced/general purpose (non-sniper scope) riflescopes made. Not quite as bright and sharp as a Leupold VX-3...but not nearly as costly either. One thing that you should note is that it is designed for LER (long eye-relief) so you can't mount it atop the receiver, but rather over the bbl. For a conventional mount (which I greatly prefer), try the Classic-K 4x38mm (steel tube or otherwise) or the Classic-V 1-3x20mm instead.

:)
