I got a remington 700 SPS in 308 about a month ago. At first appearance i thought it was just a cheap remington for all the poor folk. Me being a poor folk i bought one in 308 as a hunting rifle. Much to my suprise it was a great gun. When i shot goups with it the average 3 shot group was just over an inch (well under minute of Buck or Boar). The action is very smooth and the coating it tough and ready for anything. My setup is a Remington SPS in 308, a peace of crap for a scope(Tasco Target/Varmint) and Worne base and quick detach rings. Hopefully i can soon get rid of the Trashco and get a Leupold VX-II. My only regret is i didn't get the stainless steel version:banghead:. Overall i would give this gun an 7 out of 10.

It shouldn't be suprising that it would shoot that well. The cheap remington is the 710, which is, well, cheap.

Good to hear, I was thinking about one of those till I came across a used BDL. And just because its less expensive doesn't mean that it isn't a 700.

Bow - thanks for the range report, but what's crappy about the Tasco Target/Varmint? I understand it's not a Leupold, (My buddy has a Mark 4, and a VX-III) but I like mine for the 60.00 price tag. It works just fine for me. Don't confuse quality and grade. My dodge neon is not high grade but it's a good reliable and quality car. I'd much rather have a clearer scope with nicer glass, but it holds zero with every shot and it's clear enough.

just picked up the gun of my dreams, rem 700 in .308 heavy varmit barrel, laminated stock, with leupold rings, now need to add leuplod VX-II 3X9 and harris bi pod and it off to the range.

My wife got me a Rem Model Seven in .300 Rem Short Action Ultra Magnum with the laminated stock. I only shoot at a 30 yard range now, will be moving to a place with 200 yards soon. I took a $69 Walmart scope off a .22, got a cheap one-piece scope mount for it. I love that gun. Last weekend I put 7 rounds into one hole, maybe .4" in diameter with my handloaded ammo. And to make it even sweeter - she got the gun, a display model, but for all purposes NIB, for $400 from a large retail sports store!
Look up instructions on the internet how to adjust the trigger - you can make the stock Rem 700 or Model Seven trigger very sweet with a couple easy adjustments, but Remington won't like it if you send the gun back for warranty. Now just waiting for the recoil to destroy the $70 scope so I have an excuse to get something nice for it!

I have the same rifle, in .308
after i bought it i cleaned it and mounted a bushenll 4200 elite
i shot 5 rounds from a solid rest all 5 were less than one inch.
i am not overly fond of the looks of the stock but i can live with.

I have a REMI 700 ADL in .270. It has a laminated monte-carlo stock. It is topped w/ a Bushnell Banner 3 - 12 x 48 scope. My very best cold grouping has been 3 shots at 125 yards that could be covered with a nickel. YES - I am very much satisfied.
It gets nice comments each hunting or range trip. Get you one, as with the 870 Shotgun, it is a legend in it's own time. If I had to make a choice of just three guns:
Pistol: Smith & Wesson 686-1 in .357
Shotgun: Remington 870 Express 2 3/4 & 3 inch mag.
Rifle: Remington 700 ADL in .270
= JMOHO

BOW CEFUS, enjoy your purchase. I bought a 700 VSF in .308 a few months ago. The 700s are truly great rifles. If they keep the price down buy mounting an inexpensive stock, hey, it's still a 700 action with a Remington barrel, so who cares?
One thing I would recommend (in addition to the best optics you can afford) would be a trigger job. My 700 trigger came from the factory with an 8 or 9 pound lawyer attached. A quick $50 at my local gunsmith got that down to 3.5 pounds, which is just about right. Also, although I love my Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x50mm scope, if I were doing it all over again, I would give a good hard look at one of the Super Sniper scopes. I didn't know about them at the time I bought my scope, but I've been very impressed with everything I've read about them since then. $300-$400 for a scope that is easily usable out to 1000 yards is a great deal, and considerably less than what I paid for the Leupold.
