I am looking for upgrades for my Remington 700 SPS. I know I need to improve my own skills but I just want to spend some money on the rifle. What are some good additions?

Better stock, HS Precision, McMillan something more stable with some sort of bedding. That's where I would start. What kind of optics?

A long as it holds zero, isnt affected by the elements and meets your needs for what you use it for then its fine. But something with a lifetime warranty cant hurt. It may cost a lot, but you'll only every buy it once. I still think if your looking to improve the rifle a better stock would be your best investment right now seeing as that is the rifles weak point. Although they are not cheap you sometimes end up paying more in the end or the same price as a rifle that already comes with a good stock. After that perhaps some trigger work or an aftermarket trigger. Unless you like the one you already have.

If its the old trigger its easily adjusted, but if you've never done it I wouldnt attempt it, you could make your rifle unsafe if not done properly and your warranty if any will be void. Dont know anything about the new X-Mark trigger, I thought they were adjustable?

In addition to good optics, rings and base, Badger Ordnance tactical bolt knob ($35), Jewell trigger ($200) , B&C stock ($300), good reloads (priceless).

Trued action ... about $175 from Krieger (or similar).

:)

if you have the xmark pro trigger replace it with a rifle basix or timmney trigger.

If you have the old style send it out to get it adjusted.

A new stock couldn't hurt, stay away from HS precision.

A decent scope and rings would be good as well.

Maybe a new bolt knob.

Don't stay away from HS precision. I figure a lot of people on here won't buy their stuff because of their spokesperson, however they make great products.

As far as upgrades go, here's what I've done to my 700 SPS in .30-06 :

Badger Ordnance Tactical Bolt Knob installed by GA Precision. This knob is an absolute must have IMO. I live about an hour from GAP and they installed the knob on my bolt while I waited using their CNC machine. The fit/finish is superb and the added grip and extension you get from it is perfect.

Also, the Williams replacement bottom metal is a good choice. I really like it. It has a better fit and feel.

Currently, I'm looking at the Bell and Carlson # 2461 stock. It's a Medalist stock with no checkering. It still has the full length aluminum bedding block. Just as courtesy information, most aftermarket stocks are designed to fit the "magnum barrels". If you have a standard barrel like I do in .30-06 there will be a slightly larger gap between the barrel and the stock. We aren't taking about much though. Magnum barrels measure .960" in diameter and standard barrels are .890" in diameter. You're talking .035" on either side of the barrel. So there really isn't a huge difference.

If you can't adjust the trigger and want a replacement, Jewel, Timney, and Rifle Basix are pretty much standard aftermarket triggers.

Also, you might look into a nice coating. GAP does Cerakote. I'm looking at a Roguard/NP3 combo. Cerakote is $265 and Roguard/NP3 is about $320.

Those are just some of the things that I have done and are planning on doing. Hope that gives you some more ideas!

There is nothing wrong with the Xmark for now, if thats what you have. Focus on getting a better stock and doing some sort of bedding job. Without the bebbing and stock chances are you wouldn't notice much from a new trigger.

.

1. Pillar bed the stock. Float the barrel.

2. Better trigger... if the stock trigger can't
be adjusted to your preference.

That's about all you need.

Anything else will be pretty much cosmetic.

I agree the HS stocks are great, but not
absolutely necessary for an excellent performing
M700.

hmm.. what do you plan on using this rifle for to begin with? Because it looks like you would have been better off saving up the money and buying something else like an LTR or Sendero once you factor in how much extra your going to be spending on your SPS. I was considering buying an entry level rifle and building off it but after I did the math I wasn't saving much if anything at all.

The XMark Pro trigger will adjust down to 2lbs with one screw. It will have less creep and overtravel than the older version as well. I've taken apart and adjusted more than one of both triggers. The new XMark is polished mirror smooth and Remington is doing good on these. The trigger is much simpler than the older style too. As long as you don't want lighter than 2lb trigger it will be tough to improve much on the xmark pro. And I own Jewell's and Timney's.
