i am looking to buy a remington 700 sps tactical in .308, it has a 20" heavy barrel and a hogue overmolded stock, I was really surprised at the decent price and with the 100$ rebate remington is running it makes me think that now is a good time to buy one.

my question is would this be a good deer gun? I am looking for a rifle to hunt deer but that I can enjoy for target shooting and plinking, i like tactical firearms which is why i picked this model, so bottom line would you guys hunt deer with this rifle, thanks

Mine is the same rifle but in 223. Very handy thing. Shoots great too. I don't see why you couldn't use that one bit. I do lol, so I think you'll be quite happy with it.

Sure, why not? It'll kill them just as dead as anything else.

The only thing I wonder about is the weight and balance with that heavy barrel.

Only if the deer are known terrorists. :uhoh:

Sorry. Couldn't resist. The idea of a "tactical deer" rifle just sounds ... odd.

But the caliber is certainly suitable.

if you sit in a deer blind, no problem, if you are gonna walk up hills or mountains, you wont do it but once. I hunt a lot out of blinds, one of my favorite rifles is a Ruger No. 1 Varmint .22-250, heavy barrel also a Savage .308 with bull barrel but then again I ride a four wheeler to my blind.

Yes it will, with 20" barrel there not going to be a problem to take down any deer walking continental US. My friend just shot one with 20" Tikka T3 tactical, exit wound looked like baseball came out of its chest, that was 165 gr Hornady SPBT loaded to the max with IMR 4064 :)

Nice gun, but I wouldn't want to have to carry that thing around hunting. Limited use as a stand gun.

Last year I carried an M700 Tactical .308 Win for deer season. They are very accurate.

the weight is what i figured would be biggest issue, is this the best priced tactical .308? i love remingtons and with this rebate its hard to resist

With a 20" barrel, the weight is not an issue (for me). But then, I sold my Tactical because I had 4 .308 Wins, and it was the lightest one. My M700 police has a 26" barrel, a B&C Adj Tac stock, and weighs in around 18 pounds. :D That is where I like a rifle to weigh.

My Tactical was too light for me. (I might be the wrong one to ask) My own would group 0.25" to 0.50" at 100 yards with ball ammo. The gentleman I sold it to is getting the same groupings. He bought it for deer hunting in northern lower Michigan, with shots out to 200 yards.

I've hunted with a Remington 700 LTR in 308 for the past 6 years. It weighs about 10 pounds with scope and ammo. It has a 20" barrel. I had gone through 3 deer rifles in the previous 8 years and this is absolutely the one I'm sticking with. I couldn't recommend it more.

It all comes down to how you hunt. I stand hunt 100% of the time. The most I have to walk to a stand is 1 mile. If you still hunt or walk very long distances, you might want to consider something lighter. If you primarily stand hunt, the extra weight, stability, and accuracy of the SPS (or LTR) comes in very handy.

I'll just say that if you can carry the typical weight of a "tactical" rifle through the canyons I hunt, you are physically more conditioned than myself and I'm not in bad shape. I like the lighter type rifle for hunting, but that is due to the unforgiving terrain I hunt in.

99% of the deer and hogs I have shot were shot with a Remington 700 PSS .308, basically a 700 Tactical with a 26 inch barrel. DRT the majority of the time.

Just my .02,

Has anyone noticed that a rifle that used to be called a "bean field" rifle is now called a "tactical" rifle? Changing times I guess.

Anyway back on topic, there's no reason an accurate 308 wouldn't work well for a sniping incursion into deer country.

Plenty of people have to lug around more weight than that when doing the job, and I don't mean hunting. If it shoots a decent round accurately, there's no reason you can't put that round through a deer. If you can handle the weigh, a many people can, I say go for it.

My cousin uses a tactical 308 with a 20" barrel. Deadly accurate but the weight became an issue for him especially climbing and stalking some of the deer around the Davis mountains in Texas. So he took off the bipod (LOL) and he had me put it mine. I think it a psychological point after he realized how light my Tikka T3 lite was. I've never owned a 308 but I did really like shooting his rifle. Dropped an Aoudad ranged at 384 yds with it.

Too heavey for me.

I have a 700 sps Tac in 308 that shoots 1/2 MOA but I doubt that I will hunt with it. If you are stand hunting and expecting long shots then go for it. I have a tendency to sneak at times and lean towards something lighter.

I have one and love it but I dont hunt with it. I have hunted with the same .270 since i was 14 and feel like I would be betraying it if I left it at home. That being said I think the SPS tactical would make a fine deer rifle. The shorter barrel would make it very handy in a box stand and the over molded Hogue stock is very quiet. IMO opinion you would be hard pressed to get a better rifle to hunt with at pretty much any range and shoot ridiculously tiny groups at the range. I say go for it.
