I'm about to buy a remington 700 xhr in 300 ultra mag. Does anyone have a review on these rifles? My search has turned up nothing. Also, can you install a brake on the triangular barrel?
The triangular barrel negatively affects performance in several important ways. It decreases the moment of inertia (strength in layman's terms), and it has less surface area to dissipate heat. The .300RUM (or any ultra mag) is also not an ideal caliber choice due to the excessive recoil, muzzle blast, poor barrel life, excessive cost of ammunition, and marginal increase in performance over other magnum cartridges. Depending upon use (I assume hunting large/dangerous game) I would look at a .338WM or .375H&H without the use of a loudener (muzzle brake). Personally I have no use for a brake on any hunting rifle and a few select target rifles (including .338LM, .408Cheytac, .416Barrett, and .50BMG). YMMV
