The brother of my son's girlfriend has a Remington 710. The bolt will not open all the way.

The bolt will break or turn up, but will only come back about 3/4". It seems that the front part of the bolt is out of line with the rest. Looking from the bottom, you can see a flange on the bolt and a groove that it must line up with to come out. When the handle is turned in the right position to open, the flange doesn't line up. You can turn the bolt down slightly and get it lined up, but then it seems that something at the rear of the bolt hangs.

Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong and how to remedy the problem?

Not to be mean spirited, but the 710 is another one of Remingtons throw away guns. It has a pressed barrel and many pressed steel parts. I would return it to Remington to fix. For the person who hunts maybe once a year the 710 is OK. In my opinion it is not a well made firearm and in many cases can only be repaired at the factory. When you get it back you might want to think about selling it and getting a Rem 700 or a Savage rifle. Much better quality and they can be readily rebarreled and worked on by any good gunsmith.
Good shooting, John K

Also, not intendeding to be mean-spirited, but the problem is that it's a "710", rather than a real rifle like the 700 or a hundred other choices.

Okay, guys, it appears that you don't think much of these rifles. But, like I stated in my first post, this is not MY rifle. I did not buy it. I would not buy one because I just don't like the looks of the things. I would have advised him to buy a Winchester or Savage, but he didn't ask me. (I don't like any of the new Remingtons because of the politically correct, no-need-for internal lock.)

I took it to the local smith and he had never seen this problem before. I got the rifle back to its owner this morning and he will take it back to Sports Authority and see what they can do for him.

He could have gone to Wal-Mart and bought a Savage or Winchester for the same money.
