Hey I have got what is probably a stupid question but I will ask anyway. My brother just bought a used Remington 7400 and when we went to shoot it today after every shot it fails to remove the spent case and it tries to load another round. You have to get something to pry the used case out every time. Would this be caused by the ejector?? or the extractor?? or is there possibly something else that is causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated so that we can get the replacement parts and try to get it fixed. Thanks!!!

The 7400 is gas operated and the first thing to do is to clean it . The gas system is under the forearm and its components will need to be cleaned .

Often times that will take care of the problem because a dirty gas system does not allow for proper cycling. If that doesn't do it there may be a problem with the ejector . ( although much less likely than the gas system earlier mentioned) The ejector is a plunger system that protrudes into the bolt face . If it needs to be worked on I would recommend a gunsmith as the disassembly of the bolt/ejector system requires the teardown of the gun and that includes removing the barrel. A special tear down wrench is typically used for this in order to loosen the barrel to reciever nut.

I would go along with what the 'rat said, but I'd try one thing different first. Those guns, when purchased new, came with an angled brush so that you could clean the chamber. Try cleaning the chamber really well. The extractor on those guns is not as strong or as positive as a bolt gun, and if any crud gets built up in there, trouble,......

You can usually tell when the chamber's dirty by when the extractor starts ripping chunks of brass off the edges of your case.........

Taking down one of those 742/7400's is a real pain.........

Check and see if the exstractor is ripping a chunk out of the rim of the case that is stuck in the chamber.
I bought a used 7400 with the same problem you have and the chamber was pitted. It was so bad and the pits so deep that polishing was out of the question. I sent the rifle back to Remington for a new barrel. They sent me a letter offering to trade my rifle in on a brand new 7400 for $50 less than the wholesale price or would put on a new barrel on for $150. I replied by sending them a check for a new barrel and received the rifle a little over a month later. It shot fine after I got it back but ended up selling it a couple years later.
