i have a Remington 742 in 30-06, the mag I have won't fit in 150 grain factory ammo. it's says 30-06 on the side, and it's not the 308 mag. any ideas why? the guy who gave it to me had the same rifle in 308. not sure if he put a spacer in or something.

I don't quite get it? You are saying the cartridge is too long to fit in th magazine? While I don't have a 742 I have a 7400 in 30-06 with a few magazines. With a 150 grain FMJ factory 30-06 cartridge the COL should come in at about 3.25" and should fit the magazine with room to spare. I can load 220 grain round nose cartridges with a COL of 3.34" in my magazines. Have you measured the COL of what you have? I also can't see where any sort of block could be used without it being obvious. The 742 and 7400 mags should be similar in form, fit and function.

I measured the oal, it's within spec. it's 3.250. I don't get it either. I held it side by side with my 308 mag, looks the same but the feed ramps are a lot smaller on the 06.

I guess it was a frankin mag. has a body of a 30-06 mag, but internals of a 308. didn't know it was possible. that would explain why it wouldn't fit 30-06 ammo in it. the feed lips match my other mag and not the "308" lips. but it cycles fine in my co workers 308 742.

Glad you got that figured out. Foolish me assumed Remington mags and I was clueless as to why things were not working for you.
