Living here in Ca. our choices for home protection are limited. I have looked at an su16, Marlin levergun, Ruger mini 14.
I recently heard about the Remington 760 but not much info seems to be available, I am curious about retail price, accuracy dependability, and any impressions from owners.

The 760 is a very old designation for their pump-action rifle. See here for their centerfire rifles, and check out the 7400 (semi-auto) and 7600 (pump) rifles for more information. I've owned both, and they were pretty well made, if a bit less than accurate compared to a bolt gun.

A Rem 760 and a Rem 870 Wingmaster would cover any defensive situation you might encounter -- and they have a very similar action to get used to.

Unless you shoot A LOT, a 760 is as accurate as you. I've found them to be very dependable, but the 760 box magazine can be difficult to change out and seat a new one. The biggest downside is that the 760 runs off of a not-so-solid box magazine system and is pretty much worthless for any kind of dependable action after 5 rounds.

If you REALLY want a home defense RIFLE, I strongly suggest an M1 Garand. Easy to continually reload with cheap enblock clips, robust enough for dozens...or hundreds of rounds of shooting, cheap surplus ammo and it's shootable in a variety of competitions to get you out shooting, practicing and meeting fellow gunnys.

If you get a 760, you will shoot it once in a while and have a very good method of defense. It IS a good rifle.

If you get a Garand, you will improve your lifestyle. :)

Plenty accurate and reliable. I second what Ready said, but with less reservation about deployment of extra mags. Keep the chamber clean - if it rusts, you're UTCWOAP.
