Remington 770 in .270 Win (Yeah I know)

Hi been absorbing much of the advice on these forums since most rifle related google searches bring up results from y'all.

I recently purchased the gun in the title (before I started reading this). I went to the range and put 100 rounds through it.

I spent the first 40-50shots getting the scope zeroed at 75 yds (longest I could go).

The next 30 shots were spent making amazing groups of 4 and 5 at max distance. Quite happy. Extremely happy. The action reminded me of eating a pear at first but a little rem oil and a rag made it all better.

Barrel got VERY HOT which is supposed to happen after 100 rounds I suppose.

Last box of ammunition got me worried. All of my shots were a good inch low (and trending lower). Not sure if I was just tired or whether the barrel was dirty.

Is it bad to lean a rifle against a wall while it is hot? (Bad for the rifle, I don't care about the wall )

I've heard of breaking in a barrel and I'm wondering if I should have done it. Well I for sure broke mine in but I'm not sure if I did it the right way.

I have yet to get back to the range but I'm sitting here worrying about my rifle so I figured I'd ask.

Groups lowering

I'm hoping someone can give insight to your questions. I have a 22lr sighted in 0.5" high at 50yds. First couple 15 round groups are perfect. After that first couple groups the following groups will lower approx. 0.5" at a time and the gun will wind up shooting 1" low by the 4th or 5th magazine. Once it cools the gun will start shooting 0.5" high again. My gun does have a tubular magazine so I've always figured the magazine and heated barrel were the cause.

Unless the wall catches on fire when the barrel is touching it, then the barrel isn't hot enough to bend, if that is what you are asking. Barrel break in is one of those points of contention, pretty much there is no consensus on whether you should break in a barrel or not. On something that isn't meant to be a target rifle, I would have to say, breaking in the barrel is a waste of time. When the barrel heats up, your point of impact will change, it will also change as you get more fouling in there from shooting it.

No if the barrel isn't glowing your okay..You don't have a full auto so that's not going to happen. Any cleaning in between shots or groups? Did you slow down and take breaks or just fire away? Did you clean the rifle after the range trip and use copper cleaner etc?

Your gun is fine. Vertical stringing is a sign of a hot barrel, so that'll happen sometimes.

And you broke it in exactly right, so no worries there.

The biggest thing you have to worry about when you lean it up against the wall will be the scope when it falls over, lol. Been there, done that.

sounds like it needs a good cleaning. also, if the barrel is too hot to touch, you may want to take a break to cool things off. i shoot 3 shots then let the barrel cool. fwiw.
