A buddy of mine at work has one for sale and I've been checking up on reviews on the rifle. Been reading both good and bad but I want to ask the real experts on a rifle. Is the rifle worth 200 bucks? Its a youth model and he's had it for 2 years, its got the walmart scope and crap stock, barrel looks good inside he just doesn't shoot it since he's a die hard archey guy. I want it to try and get my wife and niece involve so they don't bitch at me when I go hunting/shooting. Its a 243 so it would be good for mule deer and the little couse rat deer we have here in southern arizona. What do you thing, what's the consensus on the rifle. I know its a budget gun but is it worth what he wants. I'm gonna try and take it this wwekend and shoot it alitle to get my own feel for the gun. Thanks

$200 .... maybe

$200 maybe... if its for your wife and niece ( doubt they will be putting thousands of rounds downrange) then it is a maybe. This gun is absolute GARBAGE.

I am one of the few people that can say that from experience. I was unfortunant enough to own one in 30-06. 20 rounds into it I managed to rip the bolt out of the gun, during a normal cycle. The bolt release lever had actually turned the wrong way, ripped through the crap stock, and was lodged in a 6 o'clock position.

I took the stock off, repositioned the bolt release lever, and headed to the gun show... took a $50 loss, but I can honestly say that is one gun that I sold that I NEVER missed.

For $200 id probably just buy one of the NEF single shots. Have one in .45-70, and the thing impresses me everytime I shoot it.

Take the $200, add an extra $100 and buy a Marlin XS7 or Stevens 200. It would be the best $100 you ever spent.

The 770 is JUNK. Crudely made, poorly finished, crappy design. Oh yeah, it's ugly too.

Leave the 770 where it sits. For a hunting rifle you would have to work hard to best the value of a Marlin XS-7 (or XL-7), and you can get it in .243Win. 7mm-08Rem, or .25-06Rem. for the lady.

:)

Remington 770

The first 770 I handled was a the wallyworld near me, I opened the bolt and it came clear out of the rifle...then it would not go back in. They sent it back, I bought a Winchester.

I bought one of those in 270 a couple of years ago. Junk. I sold it after it sat in my safe for a few months.

Just wanted to add, that if you look around a little you might find a decent used gun for what you want to spend. In fact I bought a Parker Hale Mauser (in 6mmRem. :barf:) for $200.00 last week. Yep, I think i'd rather have the PH. :D

Been reading both good and bad

Where did you read anything good about it?

It seems the consensus is clear. Get a Stevens 200, Marlin XS7 or maybe even the Mossberg instead.

Junk, just saw a Savage 340 30-30 in my local GS for $199. You can find a better deal in most area's IMO, also found a youth Savage 110 with a walnut stock for $299 a few months ago.

Skip the 770 and look at the Mossberg ATR, Savage Edge, or Marlin XL7/XS7. They are all just as accurate with superior build quality. I helped a friend look for an entry-level hunting rifle not too long ago.
