Anybody familiar with the Remington 798. It has the Mauser action which I am not familiar with. Found one new for $498.00 at academy. Thanks!

Don't know much about the gun itself, but I love the Mauser 98 action. It's gotten good reviews, I'm sure some people on here have tried it.

I held one at Gander Mountain. The action is pretty rough, not slick like the 700. The safety seems fairly crudely-made, too. If you want a Mauser-based action, go for the CZ. The 798 is likely a fine rifle, but they are pretty cheap in construction for my tastes. That said, I suppose it is more akin to the Russian stuff. Crude but probably effective.

I believe that it is the same rifle made by Zastava for Charles Daly in the past. Daly is no longer the importer for Zastava. And the rifles are now more expensive. I could be wrong, though.

Same rifle, but at Remington instead of Charles Daly prices.

Roger, I can confrim this statement. Remington imports the actions, and just puts their stock and barrels on them. QC might suffer, as they do not make the actions.

BUT, it IS a mauser action....

If you want a Mauser, get a CZ.

All the gun rag tests I have seen on the Rem 798 have been very unimpressive.

Seems they must shoot mostly in the 3 - 4 MOA range.
Or at least the best ones they loan out to the gun-writers do.

Yea, I was undecided between one of the "remingtons" and a CZ. Wound up getting the CZ Varmint Kevlar and am happy with the choice, although next time it will be the CZ American in .30-06.

Not hearing the best reviews on the 798 so far...maybe I'll look for other choices.

Do you guys think the Rem 700 ADL synthetic is worth buying? I'm trying to find a fairly inexpensive gun and saw one of these for $325. Definetely a cheap price and not as good as the other 700's, but for the price is it a decent option or just a piece of junk?

I'm not even sure what one needs to do to the 798 to make it a real shooter. Bedding the action... the stock... a new stock that doesn't look like crap and feels worse... I think the start is a new barrel. I think the 798 barrels are almost totally, if not completely, utter crap. I've seen better pipe at Lowe's. But they do put a pretty polish on it!

The M798 is the old Mark X that Inter Arms imported until the Balkan war. C Daley picked up the rifle after the import ban was lifted and was later out bid by Remington for the sales of them in the states. They are the same old Mausers just at newer Remington pricing. I`ve a Mark X that shot fairly well right from the box in 30-06, 1.2"-1.75" avg, with smaller groups not a rarity. I now have a 6.5 Swede chambered Hart barrel on it and the accuracy is top notch.
