I'd be interested in hearing from folks with first hand experience owning/shooting the Zestava built Remington 798 series of rifles, especially as concerns accuracy.
I about had my mind made up on a Marlin XS/XL-7 but came across a used 798 in .270, with a VX-1 3-9 50MM on it that has my attention as well.
Opinions appreciated!

Hello mate I just came across your post. I have the Zastava M70 in .270 Winchester, exactly what you are talking about, but as sold in Australia. Have had it a few weeks.
With my handloads it will put a 3 round group under one inch on a calm day over a proper bench rest. I think its capable of a fair bit better with more load development, though mine is for hunting only.

Very solid and strong. Great blueing. With groups of up to 10 rounds it doesn't seem to blow the groups out much at all, the barrel seems a good one even though I've probably only fired about 130 rounds through it.

The accuracy seems a little better with the 130 grain bullets (Hornady SSTs) than with the 150s, but still tinkering.

I don't think Remington makes them anymore, I could be wrong...

I don't see them in the catalog anymore, never saw too many when they were current. Based on Mauser actions, I'll bet they're pretty good. Remington's answer for controlled round feed, a la Winchester and Ruger.

They were discontinued in 2008. IMO the Zastava built 798 is as good of an action as the Model 700, maybe better.

The 798 was never actually made by Remington as far as I know. The actions were a bit rough, not smooth like earlier Zastava rifles or Mausers. Yet, it felt strong and positive. The trigger was good, too. I would rate it a more solid rifle than the Marlin.

They were also marketed as Interarms Mark X in Australia and possibly over there?

I am happy with mine. I went out after lunch this afternoon and got a real nice boar. I will try to upload the photo.

For the money (under $600 here, which is not much more than the Savage Axis/Edge) they are an excellent rifle.

I had one in 243 win and it was a shooter, the only down side is that they are not real smooth bolts. Once you smooth out the action, they are nice rifles, especially for the money.
