Remington 870 or Mossberg 500

I prefer the 870 myself. It just fits me better than a 500. I would go shoulder each one and decide that way. I started out last years duck season with a 500 and couldn't hit a damn thing. I took the old Wingmaster out of the safe and couldnt miss.

Coke or Pepsi? Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb? Bargs or Mugg? Sierra Mist or Sprite? Hi C or Frutopia? Dasani, Deer Park, Aquafina or Nestle Pure Life?

JK but in all seriousness, I prefer the 870; they seem to feed better for me. 500's have jammed up on me several times for different reasons. Only one 870 has jammed up on my and it was with some weird Winchester Lite reduced recoil birdshot, definitely ammo related there, not the 870.

Ithaca Model 37! Well suited for left or right hand shooting.

For a strictly HD gun, I lean toward the Maverick 88. It is essentially a Mossberg 500 for about 2/3 the price. It is a weapon I can afford to be without for however long the justice system takes in returning it after being used in a HD situation.

Just my 2 cents for whatever it's worth.

I like both.

Here is what I like about the 500: No loading gate (easier for me to load shells) the aluminum receiver makes the gun lighter which is nice for carrying in the field. I also like the tang safety but this is where is gets complicated.

What I like about the 870 (not the new express models): Steel receiver is pretty much bomb proof. Easier to extend mag tube, well suited for pistol grip stocks.

I am much more familiar with the 500 since I have owned one the longest. So I prefer the 500 for a field gun with the standard monte carlo stock. I prefer the 870 for HD and tacticalness since its easier to work the safety with a pistol grip.

Both work fine for either task. Like others have said, its all preference. Go shoulder both and see what you like. Oh and this is just my opinion but stay away from the 870 express. Its just an issue with its finish.
