Thoughts on the Mossberg 500

I still prefer the 870 platform for ease of dissassembly, cleaning and pointability.

Dave, the 500's are a breeze to disassemble. It's getting the bolt and slide "just so" on reassembly that can be a bugger.;)

THIS VIDEO helps a lot.

Thank you for that info, Max. Not quite sure what your point was but thanks anyway.

the mag attach system was designed for the 835 Ultimag guns to keep folks from using 3.5 inch barrels on their 500's and injuring themselves.

Mossberg has two other shotguns that accepts 835 barrels so it doesn't make sense. I am not saying you gave the wrong info and it wasn't true at the time they were designing the 500 because I don't know.

The 835, 590A1 5+1 and the 500 Tactical Breacher all have the same mag tube setup and all barrels & tube extensions interchange between the three.

Understood.

You have to remember that at the time the 835 was on the drawing board, there were thirty years of well-worn 500's already on the market that the same magnum barrel would have been a drop in fit for. Mossberg couldn't, by any stretch of the imagination, be assured that all those guns were safe to fire and wouldn't blow up with the magnum shells. Modern guns today, they can.

Given a free guess, I'd say the choice had to do with the military wannabe aspect of the 590 six shot and the breacher, though. The market they want to aim at would just expect an 835 attach as used on the 590a1. Both are relatively new guns that use stock parts or slightly modified stock parts. Mix and match them and you can build some pretty odd stuff. Mossberg seems to be going down the list and marketing them all themselves, too.

Peace.

I recently bought my third mossberg 500 (this one a walnut stocked ported 28" to go with my synthetic stocked 18.5" and a 28" maverick 88). It came with 3 chokes and factory porting for less money than the comparable 870

I tried and tried and tried to get a 12 ga. 870 with a 28 or 26 inch barrel and wood stocks and I couldn't find one in five gun stores! I finally saw a 500 in the configuration that I wanted and handled it, felt the little wiggle in the fore end and said "I'll wait for an 870"

Well, I came back to that store after a while and still no 870 in that configuration so I fondled the mossberg a bit more and remembered how much I liked the price, the fact that the shell lifter doesn't interfere with loading, and that I can use the slide release button while maintaining a normal grip on the stock. I wanted something new and "better" so much that I totally forgot about getting a gun that is user friendly.

I love my 500's also. The Cruiser and Persauder models that I have get more use than our Remi 870 Express.

I have an 870 and don't plan on getting another pump for a long while (ever?), but I did own a 500 a long time ago. It was my first shotgun and a good one. For me, the list for social working shotguns is:

1. 870
2. 500/590

They are two solid designs that have proven themselves over the long haul. They are so good that I have no reason to consider anything else.

I just saw a mossberg 500 at an Ohio gun store used for $125...vent rib barrel, wood stock (missing some finish) and the metal finish looked good. I already have one, but what a deal. Fin,Feather,Fur in Ashland.

Mossberg has made a real mess of their brand names. The now sell 500s that have the 590 barrel set up.

I bought my mossberg because it just jumped out at me from the display that the local gun store had. I diddnt own a shotgun other than a break action .410 and really wanted soemthing heavier for home defense. The shop had already put on a set of plastic from Advanced Tech. Im going to put a fiber optic bead on it but no other mods.
