Hello all. I am new to turkey hunting. I have hunted Deer, Elk, Ferrule hog, Antelope, Cougar, Geese, Duck, Dove, and a few others. But I really want to try Turkey hunting. I have been looking at several different Turkey specific shotguns, but can not decide which one to get. I have narrowed it down to Either the Remington 870 SPS-T Super Magnum in Mossy Oak camo or the Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag. Has anyone heard anything as far as problems with either gun? Does anyone own one of these that can tell me more about wither of them? Please help.

If you have a gun for ducks, geese and doves, then you have a turkey gun.

There's just no need for a specialized turkey gun, unless you're a gunmaker.

That said, the Mossberg and Remington pump actions have been so incredibly dominant in the marketplace for one reason: THEY WORK.:)

I've got 2 835's. 1 wood and 1 syn camo. They pattern great out to 60+ yards w/ x-full choke and 3 1/2" shells. My camo model w/ hi-viz sights has more felt recoil than the wood model, but it is a turkey slayer (5 gobblers in the last 3 years with it. 2 more with the wood model). I don't have an 870, but I know they are about the most popular model ever made. So, you'll problably be happy with either one. Good Luck

I have shot an 870, i liked it. i just bought a Benelli Nova pump. I have not shot it yet, but it has a nice feel to it. I was debating an 870 with a few other guns also

Get the one that FEELS best....

That is the best advice around; I love the looks of the 870, but for some reason it just doesn't feel good in my hands. I have two 500a shotguns now, but I still try an 870 now and then.

Seriously, though, why do you want a specific gun for turkey?

A 3" shell is sufficient, particularly with non-toxic high-density shot. Granted, that stuff is expensive, but it's not like you'll be shooting too many rounds, and it's a lot cheaper than a 3.5" gun just for shooting a turkey.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here; I'm asking a serious question. A regular old 870 or 500 with a turkey choke should work just fine. If you are that concerned about camo, put some camo tape on the barrel.

If you REALLY want special turkey artillery, though, have you considered an H&R 10 Gauge?

I have an 870 SPS Super Mag that is designed just for Turkey. I have had a few problems with it, but overall it is a good gun. But if I had it all to do over again, I would probably buy a Benelli Supernova. Remember, the 870 Super mag is nothing more than a regular 3" gun that has had the bolt milled to accept a 3 1/2" shell and the receiver is milled to eject a 3 1/2" shell. Mossberg's are good guns, but for my money I would buy a Benelli. That is why I am selling my 870.

Remington. Mossbergs are proned to more malfunctions than Remis.

I don't buy that for one second. They're both quality firearms. Like someone said above, get the one that fits you, that's the only reason I was able to choose one over the other.

Mossbergs ARE more prone to malfunctions than Remmies...after 100,000 rounds and a lot of abuse.

For the purpose in question, get what feels best. Or a turkey choke for an existing gun, since that's all you really need.

saying mossbergs are more prone to malfunctions should add the qualifier "when fired in space, upside down, filled with grape jelly at the end of the world" you wont run into a problem with either. not under normal use, nor under "abnormal" use. its those rare occasions that it should fail, you have only yourself to blame for improper arms care.

mmmm grape jelly.

*added: not directed at anyone specifics post.

You don't NEED a special turkey gun but, they sure are fun :neener: . Iuse a Rem 870 SPS-T and really like it. The R3 recoil pad really soaks up the recoil. The sights make the shot more accurate. The camo helps hide the gun from prying turkey eyes.
Maybe you DO NEED a special turkey gun.
