My brother shoots all his guns lefty, including his 870. He considered reversing it, but chose not to do so because he was afraid it would cause more problems that it would solve for the reasons RC noted. He has gotten pretty good at reaching behind the triggerguard with his middle finger to disengage the safety very quickly. With practice it becomes 2nd nature. I use the same method to put mine back on safe and it works easily.
Reversed, no. The detent system is placed off center so the safety button can't just be installed backwards. But there are aftermarket buttons available which do exactly what you are looking for.
My Wife and 2 of my 5 Son's are left handed. One of my Son's shoots a left handed 870, while the other two family members have become comfortable with right handed ones.
It can be done very easily, but I wouldn't switch it around, either. Too many people use my guns, and I wouldn't be comfortable with it. Honestly, I would have gone Mossberg if I were a lefty.
Im left handed, and bought one of those Midway safetys.
I found if I used the right handed safety I had a habit of turning it on when reloading between shots, making the second shot on skeet a bit of an anti-climax!
I never lend my gun to anyone, so the left hand safety is faultless for me.
I usually shoot right handed, but back when I 3 gunned there were stages where shooting sinistrally were either mandated or a good idea.
Shooting a standard 870, it's easy for my thumb to move far enough to touch the safety as needed and slide back to the firing position. The left index finger can put the safety on easily.
I've taught some students this and some have it down immediately and some never can. Best to try it, though and see if it works for you.....
