I came across a Remington 870 Tactical for 379.99 while looking at a AR lower yesterday at one of my local gun shops. That shotgun caught my eye, since I'm trying to train and get ready for an upcoming 3 gun match. Would this do for a beginner? I can handle 12 gauge loads just fine, but I'm wondering if it's a decent price.

I think you can get a better price. I have also read that the tactical model is not going to be as easy to add aftermarket parts to if you want to change the barrel or magazine at some later point. But it will work for 3 gun if you can learn to stuff shells in it quickly.

Well, I didn't plan on adding aftermarket parts on it. Yeah, I planned on training myself up to being able to reload it fast. Thanks, I just didn't want to waste my money on a possibly crap gun.

I have no problem shooting 3 gun events with a Maverick 88 with an extended magazine tube. People laugh at the Maverick 88 but I usually get the last laugh when the score cards are handed out. You can't buy speed and accuracy.

The actions on 870s are pretty much bullet proof if the ejector rivet is tight. The main problem I am hearing is the finish of the chambers causing extraction problems with non-brass shells. It is easy to smooth up the chamber with steel wool wrapped around a dowel and chucked into a slow speed drill. Also I have heard some shotgun smiths state that the cut at the edge of the chamber for the extractor has a funky burr left in at the factory. It can be stoned down also. My advice is to buy as much ammo as you can get and shoot it for a while. Avoid the cheap ammo at Wallymart with steel head shells. I have one 870 purchased at Wallymart in 1987 and it has been run hard and never choked on anything.
