I'm sorry if this has been discussed before.
Can a Wingmaster be converted from 2 3/4" shells to accept both 2 3/4" and 3"? How would one go about doing this if it is possible? I am gathering information before I buy a 1963-64 Wingmaster for clay and Waterfowl.
Thanks for all the imput

You might have concerns with the ejection port and the choke of the barrel, along with your concern about lengthening the chamber and whether there is enough material to do so safely.

I do not know enough about a barrel that age and whether they are steel/non-tox capable.

As for clay targets you can't use anything OVER 2-3/4 anyways, so for that it would be fine. What is the barrel choked?

Here's a thought. Don't buy the gun for that purpose. Does it even have a rib?

There are plenty of 3" Wingmasters on the used racks around here.

Don't buy a gun without steel-proofed screw-in chokes, either. Replacing the barrel is too expensive to be worth doing.

Finally, avoid any but the LC barrels. The early RemChoked barrels can be piggish, like what they currently use on the Express (which I own).

Any screwing around is likely to be a money-losing proposition. If a low-end used gun isn't what you want, just skip it and find something else.

This gun has a fixed modified choke. My other plan was to buy a brand new 870 express

Again, you didn't say if the old gun has a rib or not.

Those old Wingmasters are smooth, their barrels are well-balanced, and they're nice old guns. However, if the gun doesn't meet your spec's, it's probably not a good plan to buy it with intentions to modify it. BTDT

Before getting an Express, check out other used Wingmasters. The 870 has been made for 60 years, and there are lots of them out there. You don't have to choose between that one gun that isn't what you need, and a new Express.

It doesn't have a vent rib. It does come with the original wood and a set of synthetics

Unfortunately, AFAIK that barrel isn't worth much. The bummer about that would be that, even if you sell it to help finance a replacement, you wouldn't get that much for it.
