Please give input on the Etronx rifles.
Doesn't look like a bad set up - the 243 has a 26" barrel.
Found plenty of primers - a little high BUT available.
Have never looked at one up close and personal.

They arrived dead in the water.
They only made them for about 4-5 years beginning in 1999, and they were having to sell them then for WAY less then the $1,999 MSRP to move them at all.

There was no apparent advantage other then the novelty factor.

Disadvantages were short battery life in cold weather and hard to find factroy ammo.

If I was to buy one, I'd really stock up on primers, because I doubt they will be around forever.

I would consider $190 bucks a 1,000 more then a little high for primers!
That's about six times more expensive then normal primers.

The only real reason to buy one is to convert to center fire (just Bolt parts and trigger). That is unless you want to keep it in box for 20-30 yrs for collector appeal. The primers are effectively history and the system itself is marginal at best with the only problems far outweighing benefits on locktime. We actually tried to make a right hand threaded sleeve for bolt to use centerfire parts but it's easier to get new bolt.

the ones i've handled and shot felt very much like a 'regular' centerfire. the owner of one of the guns i was shooting kept telling me how good his rifle was for competition purposes because of the very fast lock time (it was indeed set up for heavy bench shooting, chambered to 22 ppc). other than the lock time claim, i couldn't see anything that really set it apart from 'regular' rifles.

regarding lock time... i shoot a lot, and i have a very good feel for triggers and lock time. the remington 700 has a fast lock time already (noticeable to most people when comparing it to a mauser). i was unable to perceive any difference in lock time. perhaps there is a difference in lock time, but i just wasn't able to feel it.

if lock time is what somebody would be concerened about, spend $45 for a lightweight firing pin and heavy spring and shove that into a standard 700...

anyway, i rate the etronix a 'pass' on the 'pass or play' scale, only exception being that if you can get it cheap enough so it could be converted to a 'regular' rifle and you wouldn't be hurt.

i own two of them. i paid about $500 for each, new. paid quite a bit more to have a very good gunsmith accurize and rebarrel one of them to 6mmXC. I shoot it in mid-long range competition.

There is no better trigger on the planet, bar none. No mechanical trigger comes close.
There is no gun with a better lock time. It does make a little difference, but not HUGE. I mean, it only makes a difference if you're moving about, which presumably isn't happening much on a bench.

the guns are a bit finicky and battery life is WAY less than advertised.

I bought 5000 primers for maybe $100ish /k when i was buying regular primers for $20/k. still a 5x multiple, but that was a lifetime supply for me, as i'll prob put 1000 rnds through the 220 swift, and 4000 rnds through my 6XC, and i'll be on to something else.

here's the thread where i originally discussed my project
http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=287059

it's got a couple pictures of groups. (1" at 450 yrds, and .5" five shot group at 200 yrds)

and here's another picture of an internet bragging group... 3 shots, 900 yrds

edit again: however, i must say, the factory barreled 220swift is disappointing in accuracy. i can't get under 1 MOA with either factory or handloads. I'm pretty much just keeping it around to get rebarreled one day. pretty sure the sucky factory barrel is the problem

I didn't say they didn't work, They're Remingtons for Christs sake but they don't meet the origanal MSRP at +$1K but $500 is a good price for any 700 package.
What I did say is it's not that much better at anything even locktime and Reminton really didn't fulfill promises made (battery life at cold temps)etc. If your going to bring it to market at that kind of money stand behind, keep developing and backing your product not abandon them on dealers shelves for dealers to take the discount hit.

omaha, yeah, actually, the key is the most annoying part. it's in a bad spot on the bottom of the stock where i'd occasionally like to place a sand bag. and it falls out easily, is easily lost.

navyretired, where are you getting your info? everything i've read says locktime is 27 microseconds. normally, when people don't use the phrase "not that much better" when they're talking about a 2 order of magnitude improvement
