I have been known to carry quite a variety of handguns, from revolvers to semi-auto, and from .22LR to 45 acp. Most all of the carry guns have been compact or subcompact, and the semi-autos typically are 1911s or have operating systems similar to 1911s (e.g., manual safeties, SA triggers, etc.).
And I always have a Smith 43C 22 revolver in my pocket regardless what I have on my belt.
Anyway, I recently picked up a new gun that I think may very well be the perfect carry gun FOR ME (your opinion may differ, obviously, and I do not invite a debate on that issue): The new Remington Lightweight Executive.
It is a 1911 in 45 with an aluminum frame, bobtail full grip, and a short, officer's style slide/barrel on top. The factory night sights are perfect, somewhat resembling Trijican HD night sights. For me, it carries like a dream in either a Ready Tactical IWB kydex holster or a CrossBreed IWB holster.
Accuracy and reliability with my reloads have been exceptional (I load a 200 grain lead Zero SWC bullet over enough Bullseye). I have several hundred rounds of my reloads through it so far, and I plan to shoot the heck out of it.
With factory ball ammo or SD ammo, the gun does recoil enthusiastically, but not unbearably so.
For me, I plan to stick with my reloads, which are not powder-puff, but do not kick like factory.
At my age, I am in a down-sizing mode on my firearms inventory, but if Remington comes out with an identical model in 9mm, I plan to snatch up the first one in town. That would give me the flexibility to shoot the 45 when I have an abundance of reloads put back and 9mm when those rounds are on sale.
Take a look at the offering. It might fit your program as well.
