Retail price is $1469 on that rifle. You might be able to find one cheaper, but not that often. If you find one cheaper, I'd have the cash in-hand, ready to deal the moment you find one.

A shooting buddy of mine is a member of the USMC Scout/Sniper Assn and was lucky enough to get two of them for $1000 apiece.

Regarding optics: the original Redfield accu-trak scopes are no longer produced and are difficult to find. If I remember correctly, replicas were supposed to be made by Leupold.

Wow

Local dealer has one. I glanced at it, and the price, didn't think too much of it. Really didn't look like anything special. I bet Remington is laughing all the way to the bank on this one.

atblis, not Remington, the reason for the price is COLLECTOR demand, Domestic martial arms are always more expensive, look at the Springfield 03A3s goinf for $650 while the rifle and its ammo we copied the German 98 mauser can be had for $200....

The best deal I've found on a papered complete m40 was $550 it was part of an estate gun collection of 218 guns I purchased 4 years ago, the late owners kids had had an appraisal done on dads collection but they hired the wrong apraiser as this one had no experience with military collections at all and as the kids were only intrested in stripping their late parents estate for all the $$ they could get outa it I had no qualms about agreeing to their apprasiers prices....... it was really hard to resist enlightening them as to what the collection was really worth, one of the handguns was an original SS marked Browning HP with documentation that was listed as being worth $319!!

An exceptionally fine example of marketing. It's a scoped, medium heavy barreled, 24", 700 with a pretty box. As I recall, USMC armourers did a fair amount of modifications to the stock 700. Bedding, triggers, etc. $1469 is nuts for a box.

Heck, with the new crops of rifles coming out, the Marine Corps may be selling off it old scopes via their store at Quantico. Who knows when the rifles will follow?

Exactly

Yep

As I said, I've looked at them, and it looked completely like a marekting gimmick to me. You'd be better off looking for an old Varmint model 700 in 308, and putting the stock on yourself.

when I first looked at this, my interest was peaked, but the more I thought, I realized that this isn't really much of a deal.

This M40 is really little more than a Rem 700 with a new, very nice box. And as someone mentioned above- you could easily build this rifle for far less.

Also, I've heard from various sources that Vietnam era shooters did a great amount of work on their rifles to get them up to snuff, which doesn't inspire me to spend more than a thousand dollars on a rifle.

Did those "M40" go thru the custom gunsmith shop or the custom graphics shop?:scrutiny:
It is very foolish to speculate on this rifles value- heck, Barbie dolls fetch some good coin. That said, a "stock" remy 700 heavy barrel 308 is ALWAYS a "stock" remy 700 heavy barrel 308. If you lost the box, a.k.a wife tossed it during spring cleaning like mine did to about a dozen winchester boxes, how much would it lose in value? A-LOT ~Thats what I thought.
Still, a commodity in high demand for the mall ninjas and other "special" forces folks secretly wading amoungst us. Like the fungus among us.:neener:
It doesn't come with a scope. If I wanted one I'd get it, but then again I see no reason for the cardboard box costing $800. "I'll take mine sans the box, what ? $572 for the rifle without the cardboard box? OH............ your gonna just ""make"" another M40. I see, 700 bdl.. heavy barrel...crappy stock..... marketing ploy...oh, ok..

I was thinking about that. Looing at the varmint laminated is like $900 bucks cheaper too:)
