Remington Model 11 problem

I have a Remington 12 gauge model 11 that a friend gave me. I am trying to get it running to give to one of my sons. Great gun, but it does have one small problem. When fired, it throws the empty hull out of the ejection port, and a loaded shell out the bottom of the gun. It will usually put the next shell in the chamber. My friend suggested, load it with 5 and be ready to pick up two, but that is not very realistic. I know so little about the model 11 (a copy of the Browning A5 basically) that I do not even begin to know what might be wrong. I thought somebody here might have seen a similar problem before and be able to share some insight.

It sounds like a timing problem with the shell latch and the carrier. I recommend taking it to a gunsmith who is familiar with that gun or the A5.

Parts for that gun are about impossible to get, but some A5 parts will interchange or can be fitted.

My son bought one for me for Christmas, so it's here to stay. The problem is that the bolt locks open after every shot.

i will check to see if i still have any parts for these tuesday,yes some a-5 parts will work and you can modify some others.i had a bunch of receivers and barrels around some place,that might take a little more time to find but i will look for them,there mostly parts guns.myself and mike have done alot of work on these over the years,i would be happy to see what we can do for you guys,let me know after tuesday when i will post if i have the parts i am thinking of.

Hi Bernie,
Just to clarify something,
The gun will usually load one and drop one on the ground at the same time?
The carrier latch must not be catching the rim of the next case in time.
This is a pivoted part on the right side of the receiver that is made from flat spring stock.The forward end blocks the shells from coming out of the tubes as you load it,and the rear end rides on the carrier(lifter) to time the release from the mag.
The rear end or the latch could be bent or broken,or it could be sticking because of a piece of the fiber buffer pad sticking in it.
The first thing to look for on a M11 Rem is parts of that buffer stuck somewhere it shouldn't be!

I wouldn't say it was poorly written at all.
I'm used to having to ask questions of people to get to the problem since I work on carburetors and engine parts!

Anyway,The book "Practical Gunsmithing" by Edward Matunas has a pretty good section on repairing the A 5 Browning,and most of the Browning info applies.There is also a good bit of info in "Gunsmithing" by Roy Dunlap,but the book by Matunas has pictures to look at.

The main differences are the lack of a mag cut off on the Rem,the A 5 has twin extractors and uses an ejector with a slot in it and a different barrel extension,and that @#$@! fiber wsaher in the back of the Rem that breaks up and fouls the action.

Acording to the book,the carrier latch should be bowed 1/16".Lay a flat edge on it across the ends and measure down to check it.

Gamachinist, it appears that you are well versed in this type of arm. Can you shed some light on my situation?

The shotgun loads as normal, and has no problem feeding. However, on each and every shot the action will extract, eject, and then lock open. I have to manually press the bolt release to chamber another round. How can I cure this? Any insight or practical advice?

But I am just looking at a functioning gun and watching the parts interact!

I am assuming it is allowing a shell out of the magazine onto the carrier?
If that isn't the case,post here or IM me and I'll look at my gun again!

The problem could be the back end of the carrier latch is worn or out of adjustment.
The shell rim comes back under spring pressure and pushes it to the outside,allowing the bolt to release (or preventing the catch from engaging,however you look at it) and come forward,caming the carrier up to lift the shell.

There could be a bit of junk under the carrier latch (remember the fiber washer!) or some rust making it hard to move.

This is a long shot,but does it do it with different brands of ammo?
The reason I ask is that Remington promo "Dove and Quail " loads were (and may still be) made with a slightly shorter case than normal.It is about 1/16" short,which could be enough to keep the rim from pushing the carrier aside allowing the bolt to move forward.
So if you are using these,try another brand of shell or Premium grade Remington shells.
