I have a Rem model 17 20ga. I don't know much about it and it seems like a sweet gun to shoot. It is in good to very good shape. Any one have any experience with them. I got it for $75.00 about a year ago and haven't done much with it except keeping it oiled and clean

If i'm not mistaken - the model 17 is the design (by John Browning) that was sold to Ithaca in the early 1900s (33? 34?)
That became the Ithaca Model 37.
Never shot the Model 17, but I have spent a lot of time behind the trigger of the M37. Seeing as they're the same design (i don't think Ithaca changed it to any real degree), I can reasonably say it will be a great gun to shoot.

One thing you might want to check on though - is the stress limits of modern shells. That is a 70+ year old gun, and powder/load technology has come a long way in that time. I would be a little reluctant to just drop in some hot shells and go nuts. Perhaps seek the opinion of an expert before stepping up to loads with serious pressures.
I am however overly cautious from time to time.

A very good shotgun.....

JM Browning designed it. Remington made it until about 1930,when they discontinued it. Ithaca waited until the patents and pirated the design. Thye brought out their Model 37 in 1937. It's still being made.

Getting one for $75 borders on theft. Congrats.

As with ALL shotguns made before WWII, a trip to the gunsmith is in order. Have him/her check the headspace, chamber length and for safety issues, though those are rare.

Know that these have the "Fan Fire" feature like Model 12s and 97s. If you hold the trigger down and keep pumping, it'll fire on closing. Not useful, but showy.

HTH.....

Rem 17

Thanks Gents, I only fire paper shells and understand about the chambers being shorter back then and that plastic wad shells are not recommended to shoot in shotguns made after 1970 ?. Thanks for the info. Just to let you know I did go back and picked up the Model 12 pump 22 rifle in very good to excellent condition for $ 75.00 I told the lady it was worth a lot more but she just want the gun gone. This is the first time a anti gun person did me a favor.
I don't feel guilty about that buy:D
