Yea or Nay?

It's in pretty good shape I'd say 87% only because of honest wear, barrel is marked 2 3/4. Full fixed choke.

I do have the ability to reload 16ga so that is not a problem -- I'm just wondering if I should jump on this for 250?

Connoisseurs of the pump shotgun seem to hold the Remington 31 to be the slickest pump ever. "Ball-bearing action," they called it, or something like that. Back before gas automatics and ubiquitous over/unders, pump-action was the action of preference, at least among skeet shooters, and they were made like thoroughbred race-horses, not draft horses; the Remington 31 and the Winchester 12 are the foremost examples of this, although the latter outsold the former by a huge margin. Remington had the bright idea of making a pump-shotgun that could be cheaply produced while approximating the quality of its fancy Winchester competitor, and thus was born the 870.

The all have 2 3/4" chambers , which is a good thing on a 16ga. 87% ( if actually NRA standards rated) is pretty good on a 75 YO gun. My 16ga Ball Bearing Corn Shucker sure nuff is one sweet Pheasant, grouse,Dove, Pigeon, rabbit and Mountain quail gun! $250 is not bad for something that they couldn't afford to make under $2000 today . They take down super sweet which also keeps barel snug foreever BTW.

Metal is in good condition.. Just worn from working the pump and that would be pretty much it.

Wood has a small ding near the grip and it's just worn generally.

If you want one in 16 gauge, the buy it. I found one several months ago in 20 gauge in excellent condition. I asked the same question then and Dave McCracken gave me the same advice...Buy it. Boy, am I glad I did. It's a nible gun and quite fun to shoot. I think I paid about $300 for mine, but it was worth every penny and then some.

The 31 is a very nice gun. I prefer it to the Model 12. It may be cheaper now, but AFAIK the 12 was the cheaper gun when it was new. That's why the 31 was replaced by the 870.

If you want a 16, get it.
