I swapped my dad a Model 7 Remington .243 (too small for me) for his Model 742 Remington Woodsmaster .30-06 (in good shape) a few years ago. I have since used the 742 to take several deer at close range, and it has proven deadly. It does have a crappy Armsport 4x32 scope that I need to replace. Any suggestions? My buddy recently bought a Zeiss Conquest that I like a lot...but maybe a little $ right now for me. Also, what kind of groups can I hope for at 100 yards with decent glass on top?

I have a 7400 carbine (18" barrel) with Accuracy Systems brake and stabalizer on it. The 7400 is the successor to the 742. With the ASI treatments, it is a 1.5-2MOA gun at 100yds.(and I am still working on the best ammo for it.)

I've mounted a Shepherd V2 6x18x40mm rangefinding scope (which is awesome, highly recomended.)

One of the best parts of this gun is weight, it's at 9lbs with scope, mount, bipod, and 5 rounds in the mag. In comparison, a Springfield M1a is 10lbs *bare!*

10 round magazines coming soon.

Reliability wise... It's good, but not the best in the world. the first 100 rounds had trouble when new and full of paking grease, but once I *throughly* cleaned the gas system (not easy) the rifle has been cycling very well with just one FTE that was solved in 1/2 second by pulling the charge handle. It may like lighter ~150grain rounds best.

What I had on my Model 760, the pump action brother of your autoloader, was a Leupold 2x7, made for a nice compact deer gun. Sold the gun, kept the scope, it's now on my Winchester Model 70 Featherweight.
Another good one is the Leupold 3x9 compact model.

Leupold or a nikon are good scopes.. the lue sits on my 742 and nikon on my bolt gun nikon is brighter though if you hold them up side by side... my 742 likes 165 handloads the best

I have a 742K (carbine) version in '06. I put a K4 on it, for closer-range hunting in more closed-in country than my usual wide-open spaces. With my handloads, I usually get three shots into 1.5 MOA.

I don't shoot my hunting rifles a lot in any given year. So, it seems to be reliable enough. No troubles, so far...

One of these days I'll have a Remington 742, plus a sporterized 1903A3, and one or two other rifles. I'm not in any hurry to get them though. The day I take them home won't be a happy day, unless I get them prematurely.
