Hi all I just purchased a brand new Mossberg 500 combo with a slug barrel. I will be using this gun as a deer gun and if needed a backup pheasant gun.
What slugs should I look at? I have used Winchester in the past with my uncles 870 just because they were plentiful and fairly cheap to get. I order all of my slugs online and have them shipped to my door because I want more choice than what the local hardware stores offer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I think the spring is making noise in the gun. If you shake it the spring can be heard. It functions fine but is just irritating me not knowing what it is and what can be done. Thanks.

Wow thanks that solves my problem. I haven't had it all that long, yesterday to be exact so I did not give any thought to a wood plug thanks.

My Mossberg 930 slug barrel shoots best with Brenneke slugs. They are also quite a bit cheaper than most sabot loads. Your 500 should have the same twist rate. Every gun has its own preference though. Make sure to watch for leading if you shoot any foster ("rifled") type slugs like the Truball. I have shot lots of them through my rifled barrel with good accuracy and no leading, but lots of others have experienced severe lead build up.

I've owned several different slug guns over the years. A couple 870's, a couple 500's and others. Each one shot a different brand the best, but all of them shot Federal Fusion very well. I only expect "minute of grapefruit" accuracy out of my slug guns and those cheap federal always delivered.

Is the slug barrel smooth bore or rifled. That will have a big impact on performance with different slugs. Rifled barrels will do o.k. with Brennekes and Truballs, though some will disagree. I've done quite well with both in Remington, Mossberg and Hastings rifled barrels. Much cheaper than sabot slugs which really are what rifled barrels are for.
Plain rifled slugs work fine in most smoothbore slug barrels but not normally so well in rifled ones. Too undersize for the rifled bores.
