I've come across a remington sportsman 12 ga semi auto with a serial number of 744xxx. Where can I find out the age of this gun? If any one knows anything about these shotguns could you please help me, thank you.

This website does a better job of explaining how to look up the date codes and has better info I think. The date codes are on the barrel. If it is not the original barrel you will have to call Remington with the SN.

The Sportsman guns were basically either 1100's, 11-87's, 700's or 870's with cheaper wood. They only made them for a year or 2. They were an attempt at a budget line.

Weren't some of the Model 11 (A5 clone) guns marked as Sportsman also?

The Remington 11-48s were marketed with a permanent 2 shot magazine and called the Sportsman 48.

Good guns.

Just my .02,

The Sportsman 12 Auto was an 1100 with a hardwood stock and only made in '85 and '86. A buddy had one.

During this time they also had a hardwood stocked Sportsman pump that was the lead in to the 870 Express.

according to the website that was posted this gun was made in June of 1946. it has remingtons and brownings name on the barrel.

Remington has used the "Sportsman" name for about a century. They are STILL using it. From the serial number that sounds really like one of the early 1900s Browning design long recoil actioned square back receiver versions. A picture would pin it down for sure.

Mr Virginian I dont know how to post a picture on here but from your description I have something close

Well I went to the range today and shot this gun, she fires GREAT. I want to take her clay shooting next.

On another note on the barrel it says 2 3/4 or shorter shells
