Hi:

A dear friend of mine, godfather of my daughter, gave me (long term permanent loan) his Remington Sportsman 48 shotgun.

I would be interested in what anybody has to say about this shotgun.

I'm new to shotgunning.

Been handgunning for about 5 years, go the range at least once a week, IDPA at least once a month before my 13 month old was born. Now once every two months. NRA certified pistol instructor, CA DOJ certified Handgun Safety Certificate instructor, Safety Officer for IDPA.

Shotgunned a handful of times with pump and semi-auto.

The Remington is a semi-auto.

Good information on this site.

Thanks,

Einstein

IIRC, the Sportaman 48 was a lower cost version of the 11-48, the autoloader preceding the Remington 1100.

These are old enough I'd want a smith to check it out before shooting, but they will work well with modern 2 3/4" ammo. Good shotgun, in days of yesteryear lots of these were trap and skeet shooters' picks.

Yours probably has either a Modified or Full choke, and it's suitable for casual clay shooting as well as bird hunting. Enjoy...

Hello einstein , I own a sportsman 48 and really like it. The stock fits me and it feels lively, very well balanced. It is recoil operated so it has more kick than a gas operated auto loader. There is a metal ring inside the forearm above the spring that allows you to switch from low to high brass. Don't lose this! The bolt has a lever coming out the side of it pull it to the rear. This is held in by a spring loaded detent. This lever can fly out if it isn't fully seated. You can not find a tiny piece of metal in the grass of your shotgun field take my word for it. However I was able to get a replacement from remington.
The sportsman 48 has busted a lot of clay pigeons for me and I'm sure it will be fine for you. pete

My first shotgun was a Sportsman 48, 12 gauge, with Polychoke. 100% reliable, killed a 4 point buck with it at 35 yards, and a whole bunch of flying objects, natural and artificial. Shoot the shotgun, a bunch, and then do it some more :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
