Hello, I'm looking to get my first auto shotgun and I saw the SPR453 o the Remington web site. I did a search for it but came up empty. Anyone have any info on it? I'll be using it for crow, turkey & fun.
I've seen the other Russian Remington (Spartans, made by Baikal) guns at the store and at the range. The break-action guns are not pretty, but they're good, at least if you're willing to get some aftermarket choke tubes.
However, I've never seen any of the Spartan autos. I'm not sure if they are in-country yet.
I have heard great feedback on Stoeger autos (essentially less stylized Brazilian-made Benellis with rougher fit & finish and without the fancy recoil reduction systems, but with the outstanding and unique Benelli action design). They're supposed to be excellent in terms of durability and usability, and if I want a knockaround autoloader 12 Gauge, that's where I'm starting my search. Prices are within spitting distance of a decent pump gun.
As an added bonus, they include 5 chokes, one of which is an Extra Full Turkey, so that makes the price an even better deal if you intend to buy a turkey choke anyway. And they come in 2 kinds of camo, a plus for both crow and turkey.
No, they're Baikals (Russian) sold as Remingtons. They were imported by EAA until a year or two ago, along with Saigas, etc. Now Remington imports them, seemingly unchanged. They didn't even have them threaded for Remchokes; they just stamped a different name and model number on them.
Stoegers I've seen are Brazilian-made and their autoloaders use the Benelli recoil operated action design. Beretta owns Benelli, Stoeger, Franchi and Uberti now AFAIK. Hence, you see Uberti-made SAA and top-break single action replicas sold as Berettas, Stoegers and some Franchis using the Benelli Inertia-Driven semiauto action, and Stoeger selling a low-priced version of the Nova.
Please forgive the link to another site. I do not believe in promoting one site on another site, but the best way for you gents to get detailed info on the Baikal MP153/Remington SPR453 is here:
