I'm going to have an M40 type of rifle built, what caliber should it be: .308 or 30/06, this will be my do all rifle- and I have a 30/30 and 30/40 allready and could borrow a 300 if needs be because I am holding it in my house. What type of tactical/ target/ hunting scope should I put on it? I will mostly be hunting mule deer, pronghorn/antelope and coyote.

I was thinking leupold mk-4 was the glass I was thinking.

How much will it weigh?

For your hunting needs I would go the '06 route...but that M40 is gonna be heavy to lug around in the woods. As far as glass, what do you want to spend, if in the $500-1000 range the Zeiss Conquest (with target turrets/ballistic reticle) is pretty nice. :)

From your game description it sounds like you'll be hunting in open areas where long-range shots are a necessity. I'd go with the .30-06, as it packs a little more energy downrange than the .308. For target shooting, the .308 has more factory match loads available, but the .30-06 can be loaded with the long 190gr Sierra Match King bullets which the .308 doesn't handle as well.

everyone knows , that a 30.06 is better for variety, than a 308. I would go something more than a 4x , especially if every going after mulies or pronghorn.
300 yds, may be your closest shot. I would get a nikon or pentax, top of the line. Same great wrrnty as Leupold, and a bit less for money. I would get a 3x9 or 3.5 x14.

+1. Not a good choice for a hunting stick. Since this is going to be a custom build, I would go with .30-06. Factory heavy barreled .308's are a dime a dozen; the day of heavy barreled factory .30-06's is long gone.
