The late Bob Milek, former writer for Gun & Ammo and a huge proponent of handgun hunting was a very big fan of the .35 Remington. He was really a trailblazer in handgun hunting and had a lot of real world actual in the field experience and that cartridge was a special favorite. That XP repeater was a custom shop item IIRC and it should be a very nice piece.

Well, when you take it to the range, you'll have the only one like it!

I have an xp-100 in 221 fireball, and it sure sticks out in the crowd.

I own two, one in .221 Fireball and the other in 7mm International. You will love it!

What's interesting about these is that when they came out in the early 60's they were considered exotics - a rifle caliber pistol for HUNTING and range use. Remington had ads out on them for decades and they were different for those who wanted to explore something out of the ordinary.

Now Ruger offers the 10/22 in a pistol, too.

What is being left out of the conversation is that for all intents and purposes, the AR15 pistol is no different. It's used for exactly the same thing, hunting and range. They are all of the same stripe, rifle cartridge ballistics from a gun with no shoulder stock.

I think it comes down to what you want. Basically a bolt action rifle and in .35 Rem, not a handgun cartridge. While a very accurate platform, never very popular. The introduction of the new magnum handgun calibers in revolver platforms and the popularity and versatility of the TC Contenders has hurt the already small XP100 following. With many states now allowing straight-walled handgun caliber handguns and rifles where once only shotguns could be used, I personally could see the viability of the platform in a true handgun caliber. Not so much for a rifle caliber.

But that's me. Again, a very accurate platform and has been said, very few folks at the range have ever seen one in person. If you like the caliber and the platform intrigues you, you already have an answer. Go with what you want/feel, you don't need us to justify it to you.

I started hunting with an XP100 mid grip about 20yrs ago, and have always had a handful of specialty pistols in one flavor or another since then.

The rear grip of the Repeater will punish you a bit more than the mid-grip single shots, but they really don't recoil anywhere near as much as most folks think. The .35rem in the XP makes more sense to me as a hunting cartridge than many others, as it brings sufficient bullet mass to the table.

I have specialty pistols from 22LR Ruger Chargers up to a custom CZ bolt pistol in .375 H&H and an Encore pistol in .416rem. I do most of my hunting with a 7-08 and a 338wm, both custom Rem 700's I built myself.

If you're able to develop a proper field support system which works for the way you hunt, you'll be incredibly happy and most likely will be able to kill game past 400yards with it. If you don't, and especially if you try doing all of it as off-hand hunting, you'll find yourself with a huge and heavy pistol which is no more effective in the field than a 6" .357mag.

Don't be afraid to thread on a Hollands QD Radial and slap a rifle scope on top.
