I have the carbine in 30-06 and the problem is when I load 4 in the mag and then charge the chamber the second round doesn't feed.
It looks like the bolt is short cycling because the second round is popped partially up with the bolt jammed on top of the case.
If i load 3 rounds total the problem does not occur.
Is the top round in the mag dragging on the bottom of the bolt?

Been a while, but IIRC the 7400 is the gas-operated semi-auto, right?

How clean is the gas system? Op-rod, and related stuff clean and moves easily? Nothing binding the bolt or anything else? Scope or sight-mount screws the right length? (Bro-in-law has this problem with his 10/22 Ruger after installing scope...new mount screws were a bit too long, dragging on the bolt.

Thats about all I can think of.....wait, maybe one more thing. If you are using some of that new 'reduced recoil' ammo that Rem (and others) offer, is the gas-pressure curve proper for this rifle?

Sounds like the extra tension in the fully loaded mag may not be letting that first one strip off. Do you have another mag to try?

I noticed on my 7400 the bolt seemed to be scraping across the feed lips of the magazine. I smoothed down the contact edges on the mag, gave it a good cleaning and lubing and the action was noticable smoother to cycle and even fire. Make sure you're "clean and smooth" as well.

Load 3, cycle the action.

Drop the mag and load another round in the mag. Does it feed then?

Problem with MANY small cap centerfire rifle mags, they claim to hold 4 but often they barely fit 4 with the spring fully compressed. That and the magazines are expensive.

Rob, i tried that but it will only feed reliably with 2 left in the mag.
I think i will polish the feed lips and the mag and see if that'll help.
I also have a couple of those cheap plastic eagle but i have not triied them yet.
Worst case is i hunt with only 3 in the gun total.
I have already tossed 2 new remington mags because of problems with them.
The mag the gun came with, well the spring broke just sitting in the safe..
Are there aftermarket brand mags that work in these guns?
